CRITICAL APPRAISAL 2

Predictors of burnout, work engagement and nurse reported job outcomes and quality of

care: a mixed-method study.

The research objectives were to evaluate and investigating relationships between the

clinical environment and various aspects of work burnout. The BMC Nursing Journal shows

research on common nursing professions health problems such as stress, burnout, and job

dissatisfaction (Bogaert et al., 2017). Furthermore, the study determined nurses' work

engagement and effects on patients care outcomes. The research explores the perceptions and

opinions of staff nurses and nurse supervisors regarding staff nurse workload. Increased and

prolonged workloads were associated with decreasing nurse competence and efficacy,

exhaustion, migraine and illness vulnerability, and nurses' feelings of irritation, negativity, and

melancholy.

The purpose of this paper is to discuss………….

The emotions may affect the individual nurse and the entire team. Thus, nurses need to

be resilient to stress and possess an innate talent for self-management skills to deal with regular

annoyances. Besides, correspondents believed that collaboration with teammates or other

medical practitioners aided in balancing workloads. Nurse supervisors indicated that nurses

enjoy working hard, are willing to learn, and require a certain amount of pressure and challenge

(Bogaert et al., 2017). The true leadership behaviors of nurse managers, like self-awareness and

integrity, ethical conduct, and support for balanced procedures, all contribute to the creation of

healthy work environments. Additionally, this conduct builds younger nurses' confidence by

enabling them to cope with growing job demands to safeguard them against work-related stresses

and severe health effects.

CRITICAL APPRAISAL 3

The impact of occupational stress on nurses' caring behaviors and their health-related

quality of life

The journal explores nurses' perception about their work that changes the normal

functioning of their psychological and physiological condition. Besides, workplace stress can

have a substantial impact on a nurse's life while also lowering the patient treatment outcomes.

Furthermore, work - related stress has a detrimental effect on nurses' health-related problems and

may affect patient outcomes. The study aimed to analyze and examine the relationship between

professional stress, burnout, and health-related issues. Also, nurses experience conflicts with

leaders, and ambiguity regarding the therapeutic impacts resulted in an adverse increase in stress.

Additionally, discriminating stress was found to be an independent predictor of physical health-

related issues. Additionally, stress linked with supervisory disagreements was independently

connected with poor mental health. The American Institute of Stress indicates that stress has a

significant role in up to 80% of job injuries and 40% of occupational disengagement (Sarafis et

al., 2016). For example, compared to all other stressors, the factor "Dealing with death and

dying" increased respondents' stress. Consequently, the intention to resign was significantly

connected with physical health because they are confronted with more physical symptoms. As a

result, job stress may be regarded a predictor of caring behavior adoption. However, healthy

interpersonal ties in the workplace may help encourage caring habits. The research's findings

suggest that nurses' perceptions of health-related wellbeing are highly associated with high levels

of occupational stress.

The findings can be used to take actions at the institutional level, including increased

supervisor assistance, staff recognition rules, and additional breaks availability. Also, numerous

tactics may be demonstrated advantageous to more supervisory support environments

development, reducing stress on a basic level. Nursing is an intrinsically demanding profession,

and businesses can assist their nursing staff in coping with occupational stress by adopting

support programs (Thomas, Bantz & McIntosh, 2019). Thus, the method could take the form of

improved break scheduling, discussion meeting to discuss health or the creation of suitable

respite rooms for nurses. When necessary, nurses should utilize their organization's therapeutic

or counseling resources. Alternatively, nurses can obtain these services outside of the workplace.

For example, nursing professionals consult with their human resources department to determine

the availability of training and career development programs and person or group counseling.

Numerous healthcare providers provide programs to assist nurses with psychotherapy and

stress management. Furthermore, the function of the nurse in healthcare continues to evolve and

become more complex. Nurses must take a proactive role in ensuring their welfare. Nurses and

other health care management can promote a positive and healthy work environment to avoid

nurse burnout. Hence, healthcare providers and managers may give the type of support nurses

require by establishing a healthy work culture through team trips and team-building activities.

Additionally, they can stock the nurses' break room with nutritional foods like nuts and fruit.

Moreover, technologies can automate repetitive operations like medical record entry or reminder

calls, reducing nurses' workload. Furthermore, they can take actions to build nurses' resilience,

like involving nurses in open discourse about ideas exchange or training new skills (Sarafis et al.,

2016). For example, nurses might alleviate stress through the use of aromatherapy with

chemicals such as lavender oil. Another critical strategy is to eat well, including avoiding

caffeine, nicotine, and processed foods to help the immune system function optimally.

Maintaining proper hydration is also critical. Likewise, engaging in enjoyable activities,

including puzzle solving or gaming, might assist in resetting the mind. Additionally, taking 10

minutes out of the day to meditate might be critical for refocusing and adjusting perspective

(Thomas, Bantz & McIntosh, 2019). Moreover, taking a good night's sleep or slipping in a mid-

shift nap during the night shift can help with attentiveness and impulsivity. The increasingly

retiring baby boomer population has a significant impact on nursing and other medical

professions. Furthermore, a healthcare organization can use senior nurses to advise nursing

professionals to develop excellent relationships with colleagues. Consequently, nursing

contributors recommend that nursing professionals develop a secondary support system. For

example, experienced nurses provide their best strategies for avoiding nurse burnout. Strong

relationships both at work and at home are critical in overcoming nurse burnout. Getting

someone to confide in emotional distress and balancing personal and professional obligations

enables nurses to cope with high-stress circumstances.

Health care directors should strive to increase staff resilience to alleviate risks and stress

burnout. Additionally, technology may play a key role in streamlining processes, enhancing

efficiency, and lessening the burden on nurses. Numerous technological advancements in health

care have the potential to make nurses' duties less stressful. The technologies include the

application of artificial intelligence (AI) to operational and repetitive duties, the use of advanced

analytics, and an increased reliance on electronic health data (EHR) (Thomas, Bantz &

McIntosh, 2019).

Nursing leaders are critical in identifying, resolving, and preventing nurse burnout.

Besides, professional leaders should know the indicators of a disengaged staff or suffering
CRITICAL APPRAISAL 6

burnout throughout their training. The program can include increased callouts, withdrawal from

relationships, and becoming irritable about minor inconveniences. When leaders detect the early

burnout symptoms, they may take proactive measures to help their employees, addressing stress

levels before burnout becomes a much more severe problem. Leaders may establish direct and

clear contact with patients and physicians, ensuring that the treatment plan is properly

understood (Bogaert et al., 2017). The strategy builds patient trust in their caregivers and enables

nurses to do their duties accurately and confidently. Any improvement in information can assist

in dispelling worries and eradicating misconceptions. According to the Joint Commission,

resilience entails developing resources to deal with workplace difficulties (Thomas, Bantz &

McIntosh, 2019). Developing resilience in healthcare employees can increase work engagement,

reduce staff turnover and performance issues, and increase patient satisfaction. Nurse leaders

should also be familiar with the components that contribute to resilience development. For

instance, the components can include a sense of professional worth, team, peer, and management

culture, training events, and empowerment.

Lastly, future research must be inclusive by including participants from diverse

backgrounds to create a universal outlook. For instance, most research fails to consider people

from minority cultures, those with disabilities, and the LGBTQ group. Besides, nurses

experience stress differently depending on education and position level; the study must not be

generalized. Thus, all research must ensure it attains ethical standards such as equity and

confidentiality.
