OPERATION AND TROUBLESHOOTING GUIDE
2233000-81X
Teledyne Controls DFDAU / DFDMU P/N 2233000-81X provides the operator with the ability determine the
operational status from the front panel display and indicator lamps.
The DFDAU / DFDMU provides for the acquisition of mandatory data as required by regulatory agencies as well as
the management of data to determine engine trending and Flight Operations Quality Assurance (FOQA). The
system is divided into two distinct sections, Mandatory and Aircraft Condition Monitoring System (ACMS).

9 ATE 50 Pin D-SUB Automatic Test Equipment (ATE) connector provides a means for
testing the DFDAU by means of a Flight Line Tester. A PDL or ADL
may be connected for upload of Mandatory or ACMS software.
The DFDAU front panel contains a membrane keypad consisting of 5 buttons labeled ENT, ESC, EJECT, +, -. A
sixteen character LCD Display Panel is used to display hardware error messages, upload status/error messages and
software/firmware version numbers.

Pressing any key on the keyboard ‘wakes-up’ the display. The Panel has a top-down menu structure. The ENT key
is used to move down and the ESC is used to move up in the menu structure. The + (plus) and - (minus) keys are
used to move right and left respectively, within the menu or menu items. The following is a picture of the menu
structure:
At the top of the menu structure there are three main menu items, MANDATORY MENU, NON-MAND MENU,
and DISPLAY MENU. Upon power up of the DFDMU or a key press, the words “TELEDYNE CNTRLS” will be
displayed.

Notes:
Mandatory software should only be loaded or modified by Teledyne Controls because of the certified status; there may
be instances however where it may be accomplished by field personnel or individual airlines. The following steps
need to be followed.
The DFDAU Mandatory software can only be loaded by means of a Portable Data Loader (PDL) or an Airborne Data
Loader (ADL).

9. “LOAD IN PROGRESS” will display for approximately 30 seconds.
10. The data loader will now display the name of the file being loaded along with the progress.
11. The loading process will take between 20 and 30 minutes.

13. It is important to note that there is a finite time limit in changing diskettes. If the next diskette is not
inserted promptly when requested the upload will abort and the procedure must be started again.

16. Immediately “Eject” the diskette from the ADL or PDL which will cause the DFDAU to begin executing the
mandatory program.

the loader will display “TRANSFER FAIL”.

Notes:
DMP / CPU#2 UPLOADS WITH THE OPTICAL DRIVE INTERFACE (ODI) (-815)
The following procedure should be used for DMP uploads through the integrated optical disk:
1. Insert the optical disk with the program into the unit.
2. Cycle power on the DFDMU by turning its circuit breaker OFF and then back ON. If the version of the
program optical disk is compatible with the bootstrap EPROM’s installed in the destination DFDMU,
the upload will be initiated within two minutes.
3. With a correct program optical disk in the unit, the disk drive light will flash a few times then turn itself
off. The upload procedure will be now taking place and will last approximately 10 minutes. Please,
understand that either removing the optical disk from the unit or cycling power to the DFDMU while the
programming is still being performed will cause the DFDMU to lose its application program; in this
case, the upload procedure must be started all over again.
4. When approximately 10 minutes have elapsed, and the load is complete, the optical disk will
automatically EJEECT. Removal of the optical disk will automatically start the execution of the new
application and can be verified on the front Liquid Display Panel (LDP) of DFDMU or the Flight Deck
Display (if installed).
5. After determining that the upload was completed properly by verifying it on the MCDU cycle power on
the DFDMU by turning its circuit breaker OFF and then ON.
6. Now the data optical disk for DAR/QAR recording may be inserted into the optical drive if recording is
desired.
The following procedure should be used for DMP uploads through the PCMCIA card:
Teledyne Loader
The following procedure should be used for uploads through the Teledyne Data Loader:
1. Insert upload disk
2. Observe 1IDENT.DAT and % complete on Loader
3. Observe LOAD IN PROGRESS
4. Observe 2xxxx.LOD and % complete on the Loader
5. Observe LOAD COMPLETE on Loader
6. Remove upload disk
7. At this point the application will start executing
If an error occurs at any point during the upload procedure, a TRANSFER FAIL message will appear on the ADL
and the DFDMU Front display will indicate one of the error/status messages. In this case, remove upload disk,
power off the DFDMU and restart upload.

Notes:
Optical Diskettes.
Optical diskettes require special formatting prior to any data from the system being recorded. Later versions of the
application software will appropriately format the diskettes automatically. The majority of application software
versions in the field require that the operator pre-format the diskette with the Teledyne provided program MediaPrep.
The program is available from the Teledyne Controls web site from the Customer Service department.

PCMCIA card media will require special formatting prior to any data from the system being recorded. Later
versions of the application software will be capable of appropriately formatting the cards. The majority of

Fault Indicators
The DFDAU / DFDMU has three fault warning indicators, (figure 1 items 6, 7, 8) that will be illuminated when a
fault exists. The DFDAU / DFDMU “FAIL” indicator is red while the “CAUTION indicator is amber, in color.
The “FAIL” indication is associated with the mandatory recording functions, while the “CAUTION” is associated
with the aircraft condition monitoring system (ACMS). The “DFDR FAIL” indicator is red and relates only to the
Digital Flight Data Recorder.
A “FAIL” indication implies that the DFDAU / DFDMU must be replaced at the earliest convenience and is
normally considered as a “NO-GO” situation. The “FAIL” lamp indicates that the regulatory requirements for
recording are not being met.
A “CAUTION” indication implies that the DFDAU / DFDMU requires replacement at the next convenient service
location. This indication is that the ACMS is not performing the intended functions, but the mandatory recording
functions are still being met.
A “DFDR FAIL” relates entirely to the Digital Flight Data Recorder and does not indicate a problem within the
DFDAU / DFDMU. “DFDR FAIL” indications will be a product of it’s internal self test, and while presenting a
fault codes to the DFDAU / DFDMU the codes are non-latched and will be cleared by cycle of the power.
Fault Messages
The DFDAU / DFDMU will perform self tests on the Power Supply, contents of memory, DFDR output, as well as
the analog and digital inputs. These tests are performed during the power on sequence (BITE) and during normal
operation when processor timing allows. When an error is encountered the “DFDAU FAIL” or “DFDAU
CAUTION” indicator will be illuminated and the appropriate code will be generated for storage or display. Codes
generated are stored in memory as well as being sent to the DFDR within a “STATUS WORD”.
The stored “fault codes” may be viewed on the LCD Display panel (see figure 1) on the front of the DFDAU /
DFDMU (refer to figure 4).
The retrieval of “fault codes” from memory does not mean that the fault is currently active but only that it did occur.
To view a “fault code” in conjunction with an illuminated “FAIL” or “CAUTION” indicator will indicate that the
fault is current and active. “Fault codes” with no illuminated indicator should be noted, and erased and the LRU
interrogated at a later time to determine the possibility of spurious or randomly occurring problems.
Erasure of “fault codes” may be accomplished by the procedure illustrated in Figure 4 and the use of a password.
Error codes that are present but not latched have their code number and error description separated by colon (:).
Non-Latched error codes are erased when the power is cycled.
Non Latched
001 : DFDR BITE
Error codes that are present and latched into memory have their code number and error description separated by a
semi-colon (;). Latched error codes must be erased manually by access to the fault codes menu and application of a
password.
