The Graduate Program

Diploma in Community Development

Master of Science in Community Development
Plan A & B
The Master of Science in Community Development
(MSSCD) program is a Ladder Type academic scheme in
which the student has to finish core courses before
pursuing a selected field of specialization.
There are three (3) fields of specialization from
which students may choose from, to wit:
(1) Community Development Practice,
(2) Social Development Planning and Administration
and
(3) Community Development Research.
Upon finishing 15 units of core courses and 9 units
of seminar courses, a student may be awarded with a
Diploma in Community Development (DSCD). If he or she
opts to continue with MSCD (Plan B), he or she needs to
finish 6 units in a chosen field of specialization and an-
other 6 units of fieldwork courses. However, if the stu-
dent chooses to proceed directly to MSCD (Plan A) with-
out earning a diploma degree, he or she needs only 3
units of seminar, 6 units of specialization courses and 6
units of thesis.
1. The Diploma in CD is designed as an intermediate
program to reinforce professional training and
experience in Community Development.

2. The MSCD program is designed as advanced training in
CD with emphasis on specific areas of
sub-specialization, namely: CD Practice, CD Planning
and Administration, and CD Research with two options:
1) MSCD Plan A (with thesis and qualifying exam)
2) MSCD Plan B (without thesis but with
comprehensive Exam and fieldwork)
The curricula are divided into 4 modules, namely:
Core Courses – designed to provide a firm foundation of the
basic theories, strategies and programs in CD work with-
in the context of Philippine communities. These courses
are common to both diploma and master’s programs.
Seminar/Cognate Courses – also common to diploma and
masters and are concerned with in-depth analysis of
selected issues and problems for the development of
broader understanding of the discipline in terms of its
own perspective and from those of allied or related
disciplines.
Sub-specialization Courses – these are focused on the
development of particular competencies in any of the
three areas deemed crucial to the advancement of both
theory and practice, namely: practice, planning and
administration, and research. These are required for
master’s program only.
Fieldwork Courses – these are required for MSCD Plan B
only. These confront the area of direct field practice,
providing varied opportunities for the field testing of
knowledge gained at different levels and settings of
development work in area of specialization.
