For burns less than 1% of total body surface area, local management is recommended, while burns greater than 1% or 20% should be discussed with the Salisbury Burns Unit. Burns involving the face, hands, feet, perineum, or full thickness burns regardless of location, or those caused by chemicals, radiation, or electricity, or in children under 5 are considered complex and should be referred to the Salisbury Burns Unit or South West UK Children's Burns Centre. Non-chemical burns can be dressed with cling film while chemical burns require discussion with Salisbury.

    CRTERIA FOR COMPLEX BURNS


    SITE Face, hands, perineum, feet, circumferential
    DEPTH Full thickness any site
    MECHANISM Chemical, radiation, high pressure, electrical
    AGE < 5 years
    TOXIC SHOCK Delayed onset of high temperature, rash, D&V, shocked

    BURNS DRESSINGS
    Non-Chemical – Use Cling Film
    Chemical – discuss with Salisbury

    FOR SIMPLE BURNS < 1% BODY SURFACE AREA


    THERE IS NO BURNS SPECIFIC FLUID MANAGEMENT

    FOR ALL OTHER BURNS REFER TO THE SWUK CHILDREN’S
    BURN CENTRE GUIDANCE BELOW
