capacity to simultaneously satisfy not just the traditional bottom line of profitability but also two
appearing bottom lines; one focusing on the environmental quality, the other on social equity”

develop the expectation for everyday comforts of the laborers through the Lanka mother and
child support that they have set up for the social advancement among the workers, they gave
housing facilities and furniture for the laborers with electricity. They have accomplished more

8. Benefits of sustainability Initiatives

8.1 Benefits of Sustainable Initiatives in general

According to Ani Melkayan, Dennis Gottschata, Vasanth Kamath v.p. sustainable business is
leading the way to a better future, in all economic, social and environmental aspects. According
to their philosophic study it is obvious that to become "carbon neutral " which means minimum
the carbon is a sustainable initiative which companies make clear signal to the shareholders that
optimization of the resources in order to gain the maximum benefits from the resources while
reducing the material wastage. Therefore, reduction of wastage is not only economically
profitable but also it is environmental friendly.

(Madgoff ,2003) states that through implementing sustainability initiatives companies can
improve its environmental performance while preventing degradation of environment through
pollutions. There are many sustainability models introduced in the past years, among them one of
the pioneers (Mitchell and harris, 2012) have introduced a new sustainable concept known as
“resilience concept” it helps the company to analyze the finance related issues, policies,
disasters, conflicts and climate changes by categorizing them in to three sub categories as
economic, risk quality and supply chain. Resilience concept as a sustainability concept provide
the company with benefits such as enhance the relationship between customers and the seller or
the shareholders of the company, avoid disruptions in the company. Although this model covers
a certain area it is not enough for a company to survive therefore, Dow jones has designed a new
model called dow jones sustainability index (DJSI) by covering most of the areas related to a
company or an organization in order to enhance the performance while adopting to company’s
sustainability as a business approach. Alternatively (Hollingworth,2009) presented a sustainable
model called 360-degree model by covering all the four main resources related to a company
such as the organization, human resources, organization’s community and the environment (CSR
report of Rhine-Westphalia Power Plant). As described by (Hollingworth ,2009) this 360-degree
model as company’s sustainability initiative, has been able to manage the human resources in a
sustainable manner, work life balance is sustainable for all the workers in the company, local and
global communities where as organization plays a part is desirable and sustainable, organization
is environmental friendly in all aspects and also the organization’s economic growth is
achievable. Through above mentioned facts it is obvious that the companies which follow up the
sustainability initiatives have been able to gain the maximum advantage from both economic and
environmental aspects.
