What is this about?

Applying to jobs with optimised resumes to get MORE interviews

Creating supporting documents that are more effective than a

resume

Taking action to influence your selection

You need 2 types of Resumes

1. General Resume = LinkedIn = “…send me your resume”

2. Targeted resume or ATS Resume: General resume

customised with specifics to job you’re applying to

4
A GENERAL RESUME IS NOT ENOUGH

Competition for jobs

in Engineering is high

Why is it not enough?

Do the math…

Director HR from University of Toronto “…we receive between

300-500 resumes per posting”

1/300 = .0033

10

5
Google Math
2014
 3 million applications/yr.
 7,000/yr. hired
 That means:
 1/428 applicants end up hired
 1/428 = 0.002

11

Do the math…on average

 Today my educated guess is between 1/250

to 1/750
 0.004 to 0.001
 The probability is really about zero to get a job
through applications
 SO YOU NEED TO DO MORE

12

6
Struggling…It’s not your fault

 Job search has become complicated

 You need a system that leaves no doubt you have
done all you can to sway the selection of your
resume and ULTIMATELY you
 Get every advantage you can

13

How Resumes Are Screened

 Software: scans for keywords and keyword

phrases with focus on hard skills and competencies
 HR and Decision Makers: most importantly hiring
managers scan (look for) for hard skills plus context (proof-
of, in work exp.) and metrics.
 *Only the top 2% make it to the interview

14

7
2 Things to Keep in Mind

 Hard Skills: keywords and keyword phrases get you

selected by ATS

 Accomplishments and Track Record: the contexts what

you did with those hard skills gets you picked by a
Decision Maker for an interview

15

Resume Reading Confessions

 Initial scan (reading) by Engineering Headhunters and

Engineering Managers is at most 30 seconds (6 seconds)
before we make up our minds to toss or pursue application
further
 Top ELEMENTS must POP
 Read handout -Confessions

16

8
To Beat the Resume Screening Process
You Need a Repeatable Proven System

TARGETED RESUME SYSTEM

17

The system must…

 Appeal to a computer
Failure: skills-targeted keywords, formatting
 Appeal to a human
Failure: lack of proof, context around
the skills in recent or last jobs relative
to what you will be doing in the new job
