TLE Wellness Massage Techniques Guide

This document provides information about effleurage, a type of manipulation used in Swedish massage. It defines effleurage as a gliding movement using the hands, palms, fingers, and forearms with varying pressure over parts of the body. It then describes several specific strokes of effleurage, including raking, ironing, circular motions, and heart shapes. Learners are given activities to practice identifying, explaining, and demonstrating different effleurage techniques.

LO 2. Apply wellness massage techniques

Objectives:

1. Define Swedish massage; effleurage;

2. Be familiar with the different strokes of effleurage; and
3. Demonstrate basic manipulations, body works techniques and strokes
of effleurage..

Code: TLE-HEWM10WT-IIIc-3

Massage is not just about gliding the hands and fingers over a
client/customer’s skin. There are basic manipulation and strokes that a massage
therapist must know, regardless of the modality he/she performs. Take note,
however, that different modalities of massage uses different techniques. Swedish
Massage uses five basic manipulations with various strokes, while Shiatsu
Massage makes use of extensive pressure techniques and Thai Massage uses
bodyweight balance, pressure, stretching and movements.
Occasionally, some basic strokes and manipulations are incorporated in
Shiatsu and other applicable strokes in Thai massage sessions, depending on the
massage plan and the client’s/customer’s need and condition.
Swedish Massage
 is the most commonly known modality of massage. It is done by
systematically manipulating the bare skin of the human body
to promote and maintain a balanced blood circulation.

5 Manipulations of Swedish Massage

 Effleurage
 Petrissage
 Friction
 Tapotement
 Vibration

What is effleurage? (efle’raZH)

client’s body with varying amounts of pressure.

How to do the effleurage?

Technique in performing the effleurage

 The whole palm of the hands placed on the area being treated.

 The fingers are close together.

 It is a link movement. It starts the session, ends the session and is used
as a link movement.

 Hands must be relaxed at all stages and should mold around the area
being treated.

 Pressure is always toward the heart and pressure is at its greatest at the
end of the stroke.

3
 A relaxed and gentle rhythm must be established in order to prepare the
person for the movements to follow.

 Performed slowly it is soothing and relaxing

 Performed briskly it is stimulating.

 You can alternate between the pressure and speed of movements to

create the desired results.

 The palms of the hand, the padded fingers and thumb can be used.

 At the end of the strokes the hands glide back with NO pressure.

 The length of the stroke depends upon the part being treated.

 This stroke initiates each movement.

 Never remove your heart from the client body between movements

Effects

 Promotes the flow of blood.

 Increases the flow of blood.

 It warms the tissue and muscles.

 Improves the capillary circulation.

 Has a soothing effect on the nerve endings of the skin – promoting

relaxation.

 This allows the patient to become accustomed to the therapists’ touch.

 A link for all other moves

Contraindications

 Areas that are grossly swollen

 Over Varicose veins
 Very hairy skin/areas
 Newly healed scar tissue

STROKES OF EFFELEURAGE

1. ONE HAND RAKING

 is a technique that uses the index and middle fingers, held together or
apart, thus forming a letter “V”, to glide toward one direction.

 it is used to check the proper alignment of muscles and spine.

1st step upward 2nd step downward

2. IRONING (DEEP EFFLEURAGE)
 is a technique that uses the gliding movements of the palms,
forearms and knuckles.
 it calms the nervous system when done slowly.
 Slow gliding movements are done to deepen the pressure applied to
the muscles.
 The deeper the glide the slower the move.

3. Circular One Handed

 is a technique performed by gliding the hand in a circular motion

around the shoulder, hip, knee and abdomen.

 This technique relaxes the client and prepares the area for deeper
strokes.

4. Alternate Raking
 The same as one hand raking but uses two hands alternately to glide
from the top to the spine down to the bottom in a continuous movement
while maintaining contact with the skin.

6
5. Heart Shape
 Is a technique that uses both hands to glide in a continuous
movement on the back, neck and shoulders, while forming a heart
shape.
 It increases blood and lymph circulation and relaxes the client.
 It is done either towards the head or towards the legs.

6. Circular Two Handed

 this technique uses both hands either side-by-side each other (Parallel)
or one on top of the other (Overhand) while gliding in a circular motion.

 This technique relieves insomnia.

closed together.
