Five Busy Honey Bees

Draw a picture of your favorite part of the story.

Five busy honey bees were resting in the sun.

The first one said, "Let us have some fun."
The second one said, "Where shall it be?"
The third one said, "In the honey tree."
The fourth one said, "Let's make some honey sweet."
The fifth one said, "With pollen on our feet."
The five little busy bees sang their buzzing tune,
As they worked in the beehive all that afternoon.
Bzzzzzz! Bzzzzzz! Bzzzzzz! Bzzzzzz! Bzzzzzz!

The Five Little Ducks

Five little ducks
Went out one day
Two little ducks
Over the hill and far away
Went out one day
Mother duck said
Over the hill and far away
"Quack, quack, quack, quack."
Mother duck said
But only four little ducks came back.
"Quack, quack, quack, quack."
But only one little duck came back.
Four little ducks
Went out one day
One little duck
Over the hill and far away
Went out one day
Mother duck said
Over the hill and far away
"Quack, quack, quack, quack."
Mother duck said
But only three little ducks came back.
"Quack, quack, quack, quack."
But none of the five little ducks came back.
Three little ducks
Went out one day
Sad mother duck
Over the hill and far away
Went out one day
Mother duck said
Over the hill and far away
"Quack, quack, quack, quack."
The sad mother duck said
But only two little ducks came back.
"Quack, quack, quack."
And all of the five little ducks came back.

Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star

by Jane Taylor
Circle the rhyming words in the poem below.

Twinkle, twinkle, little star,

How I wonder what you are!
In the dark blue sky you keep,
Up above the world so high,
Often through my curtains peep
Like a diamond in the sky.
For you never shut your eye,
Till the sun is in the sky

When the blazing sun is gone,

When he nothing shines upon,
As your bright and tiny spark
Then you show your little light,
Lights the traveler in the dark,
Twinkle, twinkle, all the night.
Though I know not what you are,
Twinkle, twinkle, little star.

Then the traveler in the dark

Thanks you for your tiny spark,
How could he see where to go,
If you did not twinkle so?

The Hare and the Tortoiseby Aesop

A Hare was making fun of the Tortoise one day for being so slow.
"Do you ever get anywhere?" he asked with a mocking laugh.
"Yes," replied the Tortoise, "and I get there sooner than you
think. I'll run you a race and prove it."
The Hare was much amused at the idea of running a race with
the Tortoise, but for the fun of the thing he agreed. So the Fox,
who had consented to act as judge, marked the distance and
started the runners off.
The Hare was soon far out of sight, and to make the Tortoise
feel very deeply how ridiculous it was for him to try a race with a
Hare, he lay down beside the course to take a nap until the
Tortoise should catch up.
The Tortoise meanwhile kept going slowly but steadily, and,
after a time, passed the place where the Hare was sleeping. But
the Hare slept on very peacefully; and when at last he did wake
up, the Tortoise was near the goal. The Hare now ran his swiftest,
but he could not overtake the Tortoise in time.
Moral: The race is not
always to the swift.

by Aesop

One bright day in late autumn a family of Ants were

bustling about in the warm sunshine, drying out the grain
they had stored up during the summer, when a starving
Grasshopper, his fiddle under his arm, came up and
humbly begged for a bite to eat.
"What!" cried the Ants in surprise, "haven't you
stored anything away for the winter? What in the world
were you doing all last summer?"
"I didn't have time to store up any food," whined the
Grasshopper; "I was so busy making music that before I
knew it the summer was gone."
The Ants shrugged their shoulders in disgust.
"Making music, were you?" they cried. "Very well;
now dance!" And they turned their backs on the
Grasshopper and went on with their work.
Moral: There's a time for work and a time for play.

Little Red Hen

From Mother Goose’s Treasury

Little Red Hen found a grain of wheat.

“Who will plant this?” She asked.
“Not I,” said the cat.
“Not I,” said the goose.
“Not I,” said the rat.
“Then I will,” said Little Red Hen.
So she buried the wheat in the ground. After a
while it grew up yellow and ripe.
“The wheat is ripe now,” said Little Red Hen. “Who
will cut and thresh it?”
“Not I,” said the cat.
“Not I,” said the goose.
“Not I,” said the rat.
“Then I will,” said Little Red Hen.
So she cut it with her bill and threshed it with her
wings. Then she asked, “Who will take this wheat to
the mill?”
“Not I,” said the cat.
“Not I,” said the goose.
“Not I,” said the rat.
“Then I will,” said Little Red Hen.
So she took the wheat to the mill, where it was
ground. Then she carried the flour home.

Little Red Hen
From Mother Goose’s Treasury
“Who will make me some bread with this flour?”
She asked.
“Not I,” said the cat.
“Not I,” said the goose.
“Not I,” said the rat.
“Then I will,” said Little Red Hen.
So she made and baked the bread.
Then she said, “Now we shall see who will eat this
bread.”
“We will,” said the cat, goose, and rat.
“I am quite sure you would,” said Little Red Hen, “if
you could get it.”
Then she called her chicks, and they ate up all the
bread.
There was none left at all for the cat, or the
goose, or the rat.
