LESSON NUMBER: 1 – 8 ( Week: 1st -2nd ) TOPIC/TITLE:

Addition

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
1.Illustrate addition as “ putting together, combining, or joining sets”
2.Visualizes and adds two one-digit and three one- digit numbers.
3.Adds two one-digit numbers using appropriate mental techniques.
4.Visualize and add numbers with sum through 99 with and without regrouping.

I. NEED TO CONNECT
 Look at the picture below.
 This is Dora, she is pointing on something.
 Can you tell if what did she saw?

 Yes, you are right! Dora saw many blue birds.

 How many birds did she saw on the tree? __________, how about flying over the
fence?_________
 Can you tell if how many birds did Dora saw in all?________

If you answered 8 birds, then you are correct. But how did you get the right
answer?

II. NEED TO DISCOVER

Okay, I get it ! You count first the number of birds on the tree then the number of birds
flying over the fence.
 So meaning you used Addition. Right?
 Because, when we say

Addition – is the process of adding something to something else or “ putting

together”.

2 + 6 = 8 is an addition sentence.
The symbol ( = ) means “equal to”
The “plus” ( + ) sign is a part of an
addition sentence that means “to add to”
2 + 6 = 8 birds
The “sum” is the answer to an addition
sentence.
III. NEED TO DISCUSS

2 + 6 = 8 addition sentence

Addends sum

numbers that are added together.

Examples:
Addition sentence

+ = 11 7 + 4 = 11

+ = 10 8 + 2 = 10

Remember: We can change the position of the addends and the sum remains the
same.
Example:
5 + 4 = 9 is also the same as 4 + 5 = 9
3 + 2 = 5 is also the same as 2 + 3 = 5

 We can make two addition sentences for each set.

1. 10 + 3 = 13
3 + 10 = 13
2. 4 + 5 = 9
5 + 4 = 9

3. 5 + 1 = 6
1 + 5 = 6

 What is 3 + 2? If you answered 5 ,then you are correct!

 You can do adding in your minds. Adding in your minds is adding addends
mentally to get the sum.

Example:
6 + 4 = ________ , you can count on 7, 8, 9, 10.
4 counts

6 + 4 = 10
Counting on is that you start with the biggest number in the addends, and then you
count on.

 To practice more on adding mentally, try to do (Explore) of your Math for Life
book page 141 with your parents or guardians. Be prepared on your next online
class because your teacher might ask you to do mental addition.
 What is 23 + 12?

- Remember your place value lessons.

- Remember that digits in the same place value position must be aligned.
- You start adding from the ones digit then to tens digit.
Tens Ones
23 2 3
+12 + 1 2
35 3 5
Tens Ones
1
25 2 5 - add the numbers at the ones place: 5 + 7 = 12
+ 37 3 7 - put 2 on the ones place and 1 in the tens place
62 6 2 - then add all the numbers in the tens place:1 + 2 + 3
=6
 To know more about adding numbers with and without regrouping watch the
video on youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RKL0TX8ogmw (Adding 2
Digit Numbers With Regrouping) and https://www.youtube.com/watch?
