After going through this module, you are expected to:
1. Add two one-digit numbers with sums up to 18;
2. Add three one-digit numbers;
3. Add numbers with sums through 99 without and with
regrouping.

Choose the letter of the best answer. Write it in the

blank before the number.

_____1. Ana bought 2 pieces candies, 4 marshmallows

and 6 chocolates. How many sweets did she buy in all?

A. 10 B. 12 C. 14 D. 16

_____3. What is the sum when you add 18 and 74?

A. 62 B. 72 C. 82 D. 92

_____4. I have 7 soccer balls. I am given 6 more soccer

balls. How many soccer balls do I have?

_____5. A bakery sells 8 egg pies on Monday and 5 apple

pies on Tuesday. How many pies in total?

A. 13 B. 15 C. 17 D. 19

Let’s practice! Color the balloons that contain the

addends of the number in the box.

Adding 2 one-digit numbers with sum up to 18

Hayley is a new Grade 1 pupil in at Putatan

Elementary School. On her first day, she was able to make
new friends. She has 7 friends who are girls and 5 friends
who are boys. How many friends does she have in all?
Let’s solve the problem through illustration.

7 + 5
= 12 friends

4
Other example: Young children like you should eat
healthy foods. Let us try to counting the following.

8 + 5 = _____

Adding three one-digit numbers

The Grade 1 pupils brought bananas for their school

activity. Lucas brought 6 bananas. Hayley went to school
with 7 bananas and Rafa with 3 bananas. How many
bananas did the pupils bring for their school activity?

Look for the numbers with total of 10 (7 and 3).

7 + 3 = 10. Then add the remaining number.
10 + 6 = 16. So, there are 16 bananas the children
brought for their school activity.

5
Other example:

If there is no number with a total of 10, add the first 2

numbers (7 and 2).
7 + 2 = 9. Then add the third number.
9 + 5 = 14.
We can also arrange the numbers vertically before
adding.
7
2
+ 5
14

Take note that even if you arrange the addends in

different order or places, it does not affect the sum.

4 + 6 + 3 = 13 or 3 + 4 + 6 = 13

Adding numbers with sums through 99 without and with
regrouping

Roniel like to visit the library and read books.

Yesterday, he was able to read 21 pages and now he has
finished reading 25 pages. Let’s count the number of
pages Roniel was able to read.

Arrange the numbers in column. Make sure that the

digits were aligned according to its place value.
21
+ 25

Add the digits in the ones place.

21
+ 25
6

Then add the digits in the tens place.

21
+ 25
46 pages Roniel was able to read

7
Other example:
45 + 26 = _____

Arrange the numbers in column. Make sure that the digits

were aligned according to its place value.

45
+ 26

Add the digits in the ones place. Regroup if needed.

1
45
+ 26
1

Then add the digits in the tens place. Don’t forget to

add the regrouped number.

45
+ 26

Add the following pictures. Write your answer inside
the box.

We may write addition sentence horizontally or
vertically. When adding two to three one-digit
addends, add the first two numbers then add their
sum to the third number.
When adding numbers without regrouping, add
the digits in the ones place value first, followed by the
tens.
When adding numbers with regrouping, align
the numbers according to their place values first before
adding the numbers. Addition with regrouping is
done if the sum of the numbers is more than 9.

Solve the sum at the left and match them with

the answers at the right. Write the letter of the correct
answer.

_____1. 42 A. 99
+ 48

_____2. 62 B. 90
+ 25

10
_____3. 47 C. 95
+ 52

_____4. 80 D. 84
+ 15

_____5. 26 E. 87
+ 58

Arrange the numbers in column, then add. Regroup if

needed.

1. 28 + 12

2. 45 + 24

3. 62 + 17
