Looking Back to your Lesson

In our previous lesson we discussed about order or pattern.

A pattern is a series or sequence that repeats.
Example 1: 0, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25…..
What is the pattern here? Every number is increased by 5 to get the next number, a
constant increment of 5.
Example 2: What are the two terms in the sequence?

1,3,5,7,_____

In order to find the next two terms, we need to analyze the terms and see what
exactly is happening. The first two terms are 1 and 3, to find the difference between, it
can subtract 3 and 1 the answer is 2 (3 – 1 = 2). So, the difference with the amount of
change is that 2. The next term goes from 3 to 5, we can subtract again (5-3 = 2) and
the answer is also 2. Then, 5 goes to 7 have a difference of 2 again, we see that the
pattern is going up 2 times. So, we add 2 to the 4 th term (7) to have the answer on the
5th term (7 + 2 = 9). The answer on the 5th term is 9.

Let’s do this.

Encircle the letter of the correct answer.

1. What is the missing number in the sequence? 2, 4, 6, __, __, 12, 14, __

A. 8, 10, 16 B. 7, 8, 15 C. 9, 11, 17 D. 8, 10, 18

2. Identify the missing number in the sequence. 7, 14 , __, 28, ____, 42, __, 56

A. 21, 35 ,50 B. 15, 41, 55 C. 21, 35, 49 D. 17, 31, 45

3. Find the missing number in the sequence 10, 20,30, ____,____,____,70 , ____

A. 40, 50, 60, 70 B. 40, 50, 60, 90 C. 35, 45, 55, 75 D. 40, 50, 60, 80

4. What is the missing number in the sequence? 6, 12,18 , ____, ____, ____, 42, 48

A. 24, 30, 36 B. 19, 21, 23 C. 20, 21, 24 D. 25, 30, 35

5. Find the missing number in the sequence 3, 6, 9, ____, 15 , ____,____ , ____

A.10, 16, 17, 18 B. 12, 17, 19,21 C. 12, 18, 21, 24 D. 13, 17, 19, 21

Introduction of the Topic

Factors

What is a factor?

Factors are the numbers we can multiply together to get another

number:

2 and 3 are factors of 6.

Example 1: Find the factors of 14.

If you have a multiplication of 2 x 7 = 14. Then, the numbers that

we multiplied are called factors.

2 x 7 are factors of 14, 14 are called product.

List all the factors of 14.

1 x 14 = 14

2 x 7 = 14
The factors of 14 are 1, 2, 7, and 14.

Example 2: Find the factors of 19.

1 and 19 are factors of 19. It just happened that 19 doesn’t have any factors
except 1 and 19, it means that 19 is a prime. Number 19 is prime because it doesn’t
have any factors except 1 and itself.

Multiples

A multiple of a number

 is the product obtained when the given number is multiplied by the same
or any number.

 All the numbers that each will be divided to, without leaving any
remainder.

 Multiples are the bases of multiplication tables.

Example 1: The multiples of 6 are 6, 12, 18, 24, 30, 36…….

The first multiple of 6 is 6. This will be calculated by multiplying 6x1.

4/10
Math 4 Quarter 2 Week 1
The second multiple of 6 is 12. This will be calculated by multiplying
6x2. And so on.

(a) Write the first ten multiples of 3.

3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, 21, 24, 27, 30
1 st
2 nd 3rd 4th 5th 6th 7th 8th 9th 10th

(b) What is the 8th multiple of 9? 8x9=72

The 8th multiple of 9 is 72.

Example 1: Find the multiples of 7.

7 x any number = its multiple

7x1=7
7 x 2 = 14
7 x 3 = 21
7 x 4 = 28
7 x 5 = 35
7 x 6 = 42
7 x 7 = 49
7 x 8 = 56
7 x 9 = 63
7 x 10 = 70
We get a series of multiples by multiplying the given number by other
numbers.

Thus, the multiples of 7 are 7, 14, 21, 28, 35, 42, 49, 56, 63, 70 ....

Prime and Composite Numbers

A prime number is a number with only two factors: one and itself.

A composite number is a number with more than two factors.

The number of factors determines whether a number is prime or composite.

Example 1: Is 7 a prime or composite number?

The factors of 7 are only 1 and 7 (one and itself).

Thus 7 is a prime number.

Example 2: Is 8 a prime or composite number?

The factors of 8 are 1, 2, 4, and 8 (more than two factors).

Thus 8 is a composite number.
