Session 4: Odd and Even Numbers

Knowledge Quest:

 Even integers
An integer with the last digit of 0, 2, 4, 6, 8 are even integers.
 Odd integers
An integer with the last digit of 1, 3, 5, 7, 9 are odd integer.
 Properties
even + even = even 12 + 14 = 26
even + odd = odd 12 + 13 = 25
odd + odd = even 13 + 11 = 24
odd x odd = odd 7 x 3 = 21
odd ÷ odd = odd 27 ÷ 3 = 9
odd x even = even 11 x 2 = 22
odd ≠ even 1≠2
 The sum of any even integer and 1 is odd: 4 + 1 = 5
 The sum of two consecutive integers is odd: 12 + 13 = 25
 The product of two consecutive integers is even: 2 x 3 = 6
 If the product of n positive integers is even, at least one these n positive integers is even.
 If the product of n positive integers is odd, all of these n positive integers is are odd.
 If the number of odd integers is even, then the sum of them is even.
 If the number of odd integers is odd, then the sum of them is odd.

Problem 1: Add any 30 consecutive integers together. Is the sum even or odd?

Problem 2: The sequence 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34,… is formed like this: any term is the sum of the
two terms before it, starting from the third term. How many are even numbers of the first 63 terms
of the sequence?

Problem 3: All the positive integers greater than 0 are arranged in five columns (A, B, C, D, and E) as
shown. Continuing the pattern, in what column will the integer 50 be?

Problem 4: Is the sum of 194 + 185 + 168 + 320 + 537 + 942 odd or even?

Problem 5: Add 3000 consecutive non-zero positive integers, is the sum odd or even?

Problem 6: Is the product of 2022 consecutive non-zero positive integers odd or even?
Problem 7: Is the result of 1 x 2 + 3 x 4 + 5 x 6 + 2019 x 2020 odd or even?

Problem 8: The sequence 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34,… is formed like this: any term is the sum of the
two terms before it, starting from the third term. How many are even numbers of the first 900 terms
of the sequence?

Problem 9: Suppose all the nonzero positive integers are arranged in columns as shown below.
Under what column letter will 2022 appear?

Problem 12: Amy buys a notebook that contains 96 pieces of papers. Both sides of the papers are
numbered from 1 to 192. She tears out 25 pieces of the papers from the notebook, and adds all of
the page numbers together. Can the sum of these page numbers be equal to 1996?
