Different Learning Modalities and How it works in this time of Pandemic

By: Gian Terri G. HErnandez

Due to Corona Virus Pandemic the students under the K-12 Curriculum are currently

experiencing different types of learning modalities. Although these modalities can prevent

Filipino Students to acquire the virus however it can be an additional challenge during this tough

time. And since going back to the “normal” we are all accustomed to isn’t going to happen

anytime soon, let’s all do the best we could to adjust and make this current situation work.

Remember, that the goal of Department of Education is to keep the students engaged

academically in this crisis in order to retain what they have learned.

In connection with that, to fully understand more on how the DepEd can fulfill this goal.

Here are the different learning modalities that can be utilized in this time of pandemic. First is

the distance learning, this is a learning delivery method in which learning takes happen between

a teacher and students who are geographically separated during teaching. Second modality is

the Modular Type of Learning wherein the Learning is in the form of individualized instruction

that allows learners to use self-learning modules (SLMs) in print or digital format/electronic

copy, whichever is applicable in the context of the learner and other learning resources like

Learner’s Materials, textbooks, activity sheets, study guides and other study materials. Third is

the Blended learning, it is the use of technology to combine online and offline learning

approaches. Online learning occurs when students study alongside their teacher and

classmates through a webcam-enabled application, whereas offline learning occurs when the

teacher gives the students the lesson, seatwork, or assignment to complete at their own leisure

within the deadline.

Even though we are in a difficult moment, it is hoped that the Department of Education's

plans would enable the education sector to develop a class of students capable of facing and

overcoming such obstacles. Indeed, every student should receive the education that they so

richly deserve.
