4. State how Fracture occurs on non metallic materials.

5. State the desirable properties of materials used in nuclear power plants.

6. State the Motivation of material selection based on selection basis, cost basis and service
requirements.

7. State the desirable properties of shape memory alloys.

8. Define Metallic glass and Nano crystalline materials based on their applications.

9. State the applications of polymers in making products.

10. State how polymer structures are formed?

11. (a) Explain the effect of strain rate and temperature on plastic behavior of engineering materials with
suitable diagram. (16)

(b) State and explain Griffith’s theory on brittle materials and Larson Miller parameter with neat
sketches. (16)
12. (a) Explain the failure analysis procedure in detail. How will you analyze and find out the sources of
failure. (16)

(b) Explain the crack initiation and propagation mechanisms with necessary sketches and also explain
Paris law. (16)

13. (a) Explain the design processes involved in design of new products with proper priority to materials
selection . (16)

(b) (i)An UTM has to be designed and fabricated by including JIGS and FIXTURES, for conducting
experiment at elevated temperatures. Select suitable material selection processes and name the materials
for making the components. (16)

(ii)Explain the method of manufacturing plastic gears used in computer printers. Also explain the
design procedure involved in making plastic gears and also state the material selection to manufacture
plastic gears. (16)
