Manohar Naik, deserves to be at the Position of VP (Marketing).

Alice did not only help to keep the company afloat during the recession but also turn in
more revenue that they ever did before. Four years hence, she seems to have gotten
very comfortable in approaching and getting business out of the Home Computing and
Education sector. However, she was unable to tap the market of Business Computing
and to convinced the management that she is capable to do so when the management
decided to recruit a new employee who will set up the business in this market which the
company, till date, has not done well. Naik on the other hand has his ways through which he
can bring orders from Business Computing sector, which is the current need of the
company. Even after knowing his approach (spending a part of the sales persons’
commission on the decision makers in the client organizations) to achieve the same, Mr.
Amitabh Sen decided to make him VP, Marketing, as this will fulfill the need of
penetration into this segment as decided in the meeting of Executive Committee.

In that case Naik seems to be the better option since we haven't been supplied with
another person. We're told very little about Naik, other than the fact that he'll work under
Alice, and that he intends to use unscrupulous ways to get more business. In the eyes
of the company, he's a better fit to the changed vision and mission of the company. It
should be noted that when Alice reported his intentions to Mr Sen, he did not
acknowledge it - plausible deniability - he wants businesses coming in and does not
care much exactly how the process is carried out.

We're being limited by the word 'deserving'. Any right minded person would say that
Alice is more deserving of the position, but we also have to look at the situation from the
management's perspective. Alice has already carved out a niche market and the new
customers that come in are mostly from their already established customer support and
word to mouth advertising. In that sense, if Alice's team has already set cogs into place,
and they're self-sustainable to a certain degree, if she leverages the same fact for her
continued existence in the department, it doesn't make much sense. She is said to be
good with people. If she can't tap into other markets as well, her efforts would have
served better in a different position.
