PHYSICS 117: WRITTEN ASSIGNMENT 06

Due: 27 Feb 2020 at 1000 (Sec 02)

28 Feb 2020 at 1130 (Sec 01)
For each of the following questions, work out the solution using the problem-solving method discussed in class and described
in detail in the Survival Guide. Clearly label your submission by printing your class, section, name, and student number in
the upper right-hand corner of each page. Please staple your written assignment pages together before submitting.

1. A ray of light strikes a plane mirror with an incident angle of θ. The mirror is now rotated by an angle
of 𝛼𝛼 = 11.2° about an axis through the point where the vertical line N1 contacts the mirror, without
altering the incident ray. The new position of the mirror is shown by the line M2.

(a) Determine the angle β through which the reflected ray rotates if the incident angle θ is 28.5o.
(b) Determine the angle β through which the reflected ray rotates if the incident angle θ is 45.0o.

2. A ray of light travels from air into a flat rectangular

quartz plate at an incidence angle of θ1 = 42.0° as
shown in the figure to the right. The quartz plate
is 5.00 mm thick and has an index of refraction
of nq = 1.54.

(a) Calculate the angle of refraction, θ4, at which

5.00 mm
the ray emerges from the bottom of the quartz
plate (Express your answer in degrees to at
least 2 decimal places).
(b) The distance d separates the twice-bent ray
from the path it would have taken without the
quartz in the way. Determine the distance in
mm.
(c) At what speed (in m/s) does the light travel
within the quartz?
