Read the following passage and answer the questions (Q 8 To 10) :

The lead storage battery is perhaps the most familiar of all galvanic cells because it has
been used as a reliable source of power for starting automobiles for more than three-
quarters of a century. A typical 12V battery consists of six cells connected in series, each
cell providing a potential of about 2V. The anode, a series of lead grids packed with
spongy lead and the cathode, a second series of grids packed with PbO 2, dip into the
electrolyte, an aqueous solution of H2SO4 (38% by weight).
When the cell is discharging (providing current), the electrode half-reactions and the
overall cell reactions are :
Anode: Pb(s) + HSO −4 (aq) → PbSO4(s) + H+ (aq) + 2e– ; E° = 0.296 V
Cathode: PbO2(s) + 3H+ (aq) + HSO4– (aq) + 2e–→ PbSO4(s) + 2H2O(l); E° = 1.628
V
The cell does not need to have separate anode and cathode compartments because the
oxidising and reducing agents are both solids (PbO2 and Pb) and that are kept from
coming in contact by the presence of insulating spacers between the grids.

8. During discharge of a lead storage battery, the density of sulphuric acid fell from x to y g

discharge. Calculate the number of amp–sec for which the battery must have been used.
