Block 7

Introduction

- Binary is used for storage and is the only language computers can understand. They can
only read 1’s and 0’s.
- Computers use tiny electrical signals that go on and off.

What makes a Computer, a Computer?

- Computers need input to give out an output. An input can be typing or clicking something
on the computer.
- Computers are designed to manipulate information, a thinking machine.

Binary and Code

- Using the binary system, you can store numbers from 0 up to 4 billion. They can also
correlate to letters.
- Computers store this data to make up pictures, text, and audio. This is all represented by
numbers, the binary system.

Circuits and Logic

- Circuits can modify and process represented in 1’s and 0’s. On is represented by 1 and
off is represented by 0.
- Complicated Circuits can take multiple signals and be able to combine them to create
different outputs.

CPU, Memory, Input, and Output

- To display even a letter, it takes thousands of instructions. So even if it looks quick,
there’s around thousands of instructions occurring. Pressing a key is an input and the
letter appearing on screen is an output.
- The more complicated and the more information in the output or input the more
processing power and memory a computer needs. Such as 3D graphics or a high-
definition film. Most of the time, computers will have more than a few CPU’s and have
more memory.

Hardware and Software

- Circuits, chips, wires, plugs, speakers and other parts in a computer are classified as
hardware. The hardware of a computer.
- The code which runs the computer is classified as software. It translates the code into
binary. The software tells what CPU needs to do so the computer can properly work.
