Silent E
In an earlier book, we learned The letter “e” at the end makes
about the Silent E – this is a no sound of its own, which is why
little “e” at the end of a word it is called a Silent E .
that is very, very naughty.

The Silent E reaches around

cap
and pinches the first vowel, d
making it call out its name. The Silent E also does a few more
tricks – and sometimes a silent E
does nothing at all. This is what
cap we will learn in this book.

Silent E
exc e p ti o n s

In these four words, the Silent E

does not pinch the first vowel:

gone have
give
live I need to put my sock on ,
but my silly sock is gone .

Has it gone away ?

gon Has it gone to bed ?

Or has my sock gone

from green to red ? b

The word “live” sometimes
! sounds like “give” and some-
times sounds like “five.”

When two vowels are next to each

other, one of the vowels calls out
its name (usually the first vowel,
but not always), so the Silent E
doesn’t do anything. It just sits
there, saying nothing.
“Please pass the

two c o n so n a n ts
When there are two consonants
between the first vowel and the
Silent E at the end, the Silent E
can’t reach around to pinch the
vowel – his arm is too short – so
the first vowel makes its normal
sound.
I A prince went to the shop

Normally, a Silent E can’t reach
around two consonants to pinch
a vowel, but there are a few
words where the Silent E gets
stretchy enough to reach around
and pinch the first vowel. This
happens in only a few words, like If I hold my nose , it is b
“waste” and “taste.”
