Summary
Vanka is a unhappy 9 year old orphan that has been
aprenticed to a russian shoemaker.On Christmas eve
vanka decides to secretly write a letter to his farm owning
grandad in moscow.Vanka is hoping that when his
grandad Konstatin makarich reads this letter he will take
him out of the orpanage to live with him. When Vanka is
done with the letter he puts it in the mailbox goes to sleep
and waits for it to be deliverd. Vanka is unaware that
there needed to be a stamp on the letter to go to his
grandad and now the letter will never go through and does
not have a chance to write another
Setting
The setting is an orphanage in Russia

The Shoemaker-The one who is in charge of the orphans

The Author
The Author is Anton Pavlovich Chekhov. Anton was born
in the russian empire january 29 1860. Anton was
originally a pysicyst but due to the lack of money he
turned to become an author. He had a very artistic writing
style that led him to become popular early on. Anton
sadly perished july 15 1904.
Exposition- Vanka is in an orpanage because of his
mothers death.

Rising Action- Vanka decides to write a letter to his


grandad to rescue him from the orphanage 

Climax- Vanka writes the letter and puts it in the mailbox

Falling action- There was no stamp on the letter and the


message will never reach grandad

Resolution- Vanka will never realise this happened he


will just think his grandad will not rescue him
Symbols

The one and major symbol is the stamp that was not on
the letter. This means thatlife is very cruel.
Irony
Vanka works for a shoemaker but dosent have any shoes.
Theme
There was a very dark and gloomy theme
