Clean Water
A Human Right
Not a Luxury
Today, Cambodia continues to struggle as it works to recover
from decades of war, genocide and political strife. The resulting
poverty and under development leaves millions without adequate
clean water, educational opportunities and infrastructure. Eighty
percent of the population resides in rural Cambodia; there is al-
most no electricity, few paved roads and no clean water delivery
systems. Although water sources are often abundant, they are
unsafe to drink.

Thanks to YOUR generous support Water for Cambodia contin-

ues to play an internationally recognized role in addressing these
very fundamental human needs.

The statistics:

• 6.3 million Cambodian people do not have access to clean

drinking water
• 75 % of the rural population do not have access to adequate
sanitation
• 20% of the deaths of children under 5 are due to waterborne
diseases
• Levels of education and school attendance are deeply affect-
ed by children’s health and their ability to attend school

Our mission is to provide clean water,

hygiene and hygiene education to ru-
ral Cambodian families, improving their
health and helping to break the cycle of
poverty.

Family Story
This is the Luy Family. Mrs Chim Luy is a 54 year old mother living in
Dou Num Village in Siem Reap Province. Both she and her husband
are farmers. They have had a biosand filter for 3 years and use the
filter 3 times a day for drinking, food preparation and washing clothes.
Her daugher takes a bottle to school each day.

They are very happy with the filter. Since they have been using the
biosand filter they all have had much less diarrhea and stomach
distress. This has saved them a lot of money they used to spend on
doctor visits and treatment.
