Name: JACKELYN R. TAPIC BSED-BIOSCI 2_______ Date: July 2 2021

Guide Questions:
1. What is meant by cell cycle? (Be brief/concise with your answer. Maximum of 3
sentences only)
ANSWER:
Cell cycle is a cycle of growth, development, and division that most cells
in an organism go through.

2. Be able to identify the phases of the cell cycle. Refer to the illustration below:

2.1. A-F an early and late stage of the same phase of mitosis. What phase is it? _
A- Early Prophase, F- late prophase_________
2.2. Which letter represent metaphase?
C________________________
2.3. Which is the first phase of mitosis?
A- Prophase
2.4. What is represented by X in A?
Centriole/ centrosome__________________
2.5. Which is said as the “in between” phase of mitosis?
Interphase_____________________________
2.6. Organize the illustration in chronological order (in order)
DAFCEB________________________________
3. In which phase of the cell cycle does ‘splitting up’ or division NEVER take place?
Cytokinesis_________
4. In which phase of the cell cycle do most cells spend the rest of their lifetime?
Interphase_________

5. Differentiate Mitosis from Cytokinesis (10 pts)

ANSWER:
The difference between Mitosis and Cytokinesis is that, mitosis is a process by which the
duplicated genome in a cell is separated into halves that are identical in nature. Whereas,
Cytokinesis is the process where the cytoplasm of the cell divides to form two 'daughter' cells.
6. What is the relevance of mitosis? (2-3 sentences: 5 pts)
ANSWER:
Mitosis is important because it allows growth and replaces worn out or damaged cells. It
is also important because some organisms use mitosis as a way to reproduce.
7. What happens during the following stages:
7.1 G0 or G1;
In G0 a cell is not actively preparing to divide, it’s just doing its job. During G 1, also called
the first gap phase, the cell grows physically larger, copies organelles, and makes the molecular
building blocks it will need in later steps.
7.2. S phase and
In S phase, the cell synthesizes a complete copy of the DNA in its nucleus. It also
duplicates a microtubule-organizing structure called the centrosome. The centrosomes help
separate DNA during M phase.

7.3. G2 or G3?
During the second gap phase, or G2, the cell grows more, makes proteins and
organelles, and begins to reorganize its contents in preparation for mitosis. G 2 phase ends when
mitosis begins.
