The Flare tip, ignition system and Fuel Gas Skid are self contained units that
require very little maintenance but the following list of checks should be conducted
during shutdown to maintain the reliability of the equipment and to prolong the life
of the Flare ignition system.

• Before disconnection of power and the opening of the ICP ensure the fuel gas
supply is disconnected. At this point, if possible, depress each of the 3 ‘MANUAL
IGNITION’ pushbuttons PB-1, PB-2 and PB-3 to ensure a spark is present at each
of the 3 pilots. This may require someone to be at the base of the Flare Tip to
confirm the sparking. Then depress the ‘MANUAL FFG IGNITION’ pushbutton (PB-
6) to confirm spark in BZ-01.

• Once this has been confirmed the incoming power supply should be disconnected
and the ICP can be opened to check the internals.

• Check continuity of the thermocouple wiring to ensure that all are still functioning.
The thermocouple gives off a very small voltage dependant on the ambient
temperature. The table below will give you an idea of the voltage you should be
reading across the 2 wires of the thermocouple.

5°C = 0.198mV, 10°C = 0.397mV, 15°C = 0.597mV, 20°C = 0.798mV

25°C = 1.000mV, 30°C = 1.203mV, 35°C = 1.407mV, 40°C = 1.611mV

• Ensure the 24VDC Power supply and the Allan Bradley PLC are in good condition
with no obvious physical damage.
• Physically open and close all valves on the fuel gas skid to ensure none are stuck
or jammed.

There is very little maintenance required on the pilots or flare tip but the physical
condition must be checked during shutdown.

• Remove the covers of junction boxes JB01, JB02, JB03 and JB04 and check for
water ingress and general condition of the terminals and wiring
• Open the IDE boxes on each of the pilots to check condition of the Dongan high
voltage transformers and the associated wiring.
• Check the overall appearance of the pilots.
• Check the gaskets and gasket bolting to ensure there is no damage to the gaskets
and that all bolts are still in place and tightened down correctly.
