Anhydrous and
Compressed Gas

Health 3 COLORLESS, VERY IRRITATING GAS. COMPRESSED CAS: 7664-41-7

TO LIQUID CORROSIVE, BURNS EYES AND SKIN. UN: 1005
Fire 1 GUIDE: 125
Reactivity 3

GAS: TLV for ammonia is 25 ppm with a STEL of 35 ppm. Odor detectable at 1 ppm. Begins to
irritate eyes, nose, and throat at 50 ppm. May severely injure the respiratory system with
possible fatal result at high concentrations.
health
LIQUID: Cause severe burns on contact. If splashed into eyes, it may cause blindness.
hazards
WEAR FULL FACE RESPIRATORS TO CHANGE AMMONIA LINES

Ammonia forms flammable mixtures with air between 16 to 25% by volume. This explosive range is broadened at high
temperatures or pressures. The fire hazard is increased by the presence of oil or other combustible materials. Ammonia
can form explosive compounds if in contact with calcium, hypochlorites, gold, mercury, or silver oxide. Contact with
chlorine, iodine, or bromine can cause violent splattering.
fire and
Firefighters MUST wear full protective clothing such as rubber suit, gloves, and Self Contained Breathing Apparatus reactivity
(SCBAs). Stop flow of gas and use water to cool cylinders until well after fire is extinguished.
EXTINGUISH FIRES WITH WATER OR FOAM
USAGE: Refrigeration, blueprint copying, petroleum refining.
STORAGE: Store cylinders upright in cool, well-ventilated area, away from ignition sources, strong acids,
and oxidizing gases (e.g., chlorine, iodine, and bromine).
TRANSPORT: For transportation, label packages with DOT-IMO Class 8, hazardous warning label (diamond):

SPILLS / LEAKS:
CORROSIVE.
Close off ammonia lines from a safe distance. Open doors and allow the gas to dissipate into
handling
DISPOSAL:
air.
For proper disposal methods and locations for chemical or chemical contaminated material, storage
contact the Environmental Engineering Division at 874-6426 or 874-6428.
SAFETY
EQUIPMENT:
Provide ventilation to control vapor concentrations below the TLVs. Safety goggles, rubber or
neoprene gloves, and coveralls should be worn if eye or skin contact is likely. Maintain
&
eyewash fountain and emergency shower where Ammonia is used or stored. Self Contained
Breathing Apparatus (SCBAs) and protective gloves (S/N 21-432-576) must be available at all disposal
times. Eye goggles (S/N 21-434-249) must be worn at all times while handling ammonia lines
or cylinders.
USE CONFINED SPACE ENTRY PROCEDURES IF APPLICABLE
INHALATION: Move affected person to fresh air. If breathing is difficult, administer oxygen. If breathing has
stopped, give cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Keep person warm and quiet.
EYE/SKIN CONTACT: Flush eyes with large amounts of water for 15 minutes. Lift eyelids occasionally. Wash skin
thoroughly with soap and water. Remove contaminated clothing and shoes promptly, and
wash clothing before re-use. first aid
INGESTION: DO NOT induce vomiting. Aspiration of material into the lungs can cause chemical
pneumonitis, which can be fatal. Wash out mouth thoroughly. Drink one-two glasses of water
to dilute. Keep person warm and quiet.
GET MEDICAL AID IMMEDIATELY (CALL 110)
