is uneducated about the health risk of smoking”

Plastic straws, stirrers and cotton buds to be banned in England. Michael Gove has
confirmed a ban on the supply of the items after a consultation revealed
"overwhelming" public support
The environment secretary has confirmed a ban on the supply of the items from
April 2020 after a consultation revealed "overwhelming" public support for the move.
Around 4.7 billion plastic straws, 316 million plastic stirrers and 1.8 billion plastic-
stemmed cotton buds are thought to be used in England each year. Following the ban,
food and drink outlets will be unable to display plastic straws or provide them to
customers.
Mr Gove said: "Urgent and decisive action is needed to tackle plastic pollution and
protect our environment”.
An estimated 150 million tonnes of plastic end up in the world's oceans every
year, while one million birds and over 100,000 sea mammals die from eating and
getting tangled in plastic waste.

More than 700 firefighters are battling a major wildfire in southern Portugal's
Algarve region, as parts of Europe continue to swelter. Temperatures reached 46C
(115F) in places, close to Portugal's national record of 47.4C (117.3F).
Soaring temperatures continued in Spain, where three deaths by heatstroke were
reported. A continent-wide heatwave in recent weeks has seen drought and wildfires
from Greece to Sweden.
The sweltering Iberian temperatures follow weeks of sustained heat across
Europe, which saw Sweden's highest peak - a glacier - melting at a rate of several
centimetres a day. In Greece high winds fanned dangerous wildfires which killed more
than 90 people.
Researchers said that climate change made Europe's extended heatwave twice as
likely as it would otherwise have been.

Spanish Thief Saw Himself as Robin Hood-Like Bandit
Madrid (Reuters) - Spain's most wanted thief, "The Loner," saw himself as a Robin
Hood-style figure and said he robbed banks only because they stole from the public, his
lawyer said Thursday.
Accused of killing three policemen and holding up more than 30 banks, Jaime
Jimenez Arbe was planning to move on to insurance companies when he was arrested
last month, Spanish media reported, citing lawyer Jose Mariano Trillo-Figueroa.
"I am not a killer and if I was obliged to shoot at officers of the law, it was always
against my will and in order to avoid being arrested," Jimenez said in a letter reproduced
on the websites of newspapers El Pais and El Mundo.
Trillo-Figueroa said Jimenez, who robbed the banks disguised in a false beard and
a wig, thinks of himself as Curro Jimenez, a Spanish 1970s television bandit in the style
of Robin Hood.
