MODULE 6 – Occupational Health & Safety

Occupational Health and Safety

OHS or Occupational Health & Safety refers to the policies and procedures that aims to protect the
health and safety of all people at the workplace.

OHS Policies
1. Do not work alone so that there’s someone who can take care of you in case of an emergency.
2. Always power off the computer and unplug the computer before working on it.
3. Take away any liquid near your working area to avoid getting electrocuted or accidentally damaging
computer parts.
4. Be careful with tools that may cause a short circuit.
5. Always ground or discharge yourself before touching any part of the computer.
6. Do not use excessive force if things don’t quite slip into place.
7. Clean the area before and after using it to maintain sanitation and prevent accidents.
8. Hold the components on the edges and do not touch the Integrated Circuit (IC) parts.
9. Always wear personal protective equipment (PPE) in accordance with the organization’s OHS
procedures and practices.
10. Make sure that the pins are properly aligned when connecting a cable connector.
11. Use a brush, compressed air, or blower in cleaning the computer system.

Personal Protective Equipment

Personal protective equipment (PPE), also known as personal

protection wear, is any type of clothing or equipment worn by a person
to protect them from some specific hazard. Typically, this is protection
from any physical, radiological, electrical, chemical, biological,
mechanical, or other threat in the workplace.

Types of PPE

Respirators are a type of personal protective equipment designed

specifically to protect the lungs of the people wearing them. They can help filter out dust, debris, chemicals,
and many other potential dangers. Example of respirators are facemask, filtered respirator and self-
contained breathing apparatus.

Skin & Body Protection Equipment - Many chemicals and other materials can cause serious injuries or
illnesses when they come in contact with the skin. When working with these hazards, having proper
personal protective equipment is extremely important. Examples are protective clothing (lab coat), plastic
gloves, heat-resistant clothing, rubber boots, gloves, face shields, hard hats, etc.

Eye Protection - Protecting the eyes is extremely important because even a minor accident can cause long-
term eye damage or even blindness. Here are several of the most common types of eye protection
equipment: goggles, welding masks, and sunglasses.

Hearing Protection - Protecting the hearing of employees is very important, but can be difficult. Many
people don't notice when they are working around the constant noise of a factory or other workplace. While
it may not be something people realize is happening, this can cause significant damage to the hearing over
time. Wearing personal protective equipment for the ears is critical. Examples are ear plugs, ear muffs, and
electronic ear muffs.

System Unit Assembly and Disassembly

1. Prepare your workplace.

a. Take inventory – Take an inventory of your parts. Do not begin assembling your computer if you
don’t have everything you need.
b. Gather Tools and Supplies
i. Philips Screwdriver

ii. Flashlight

iii. ESD Wrist Strap and Mat

2. Prepare the motherboard

3. Mount the CPU in the CPU socket of the motherboard.

a. Apply thermal paste on the CPU to get better heat conduction with the CPU cooler.
4. Attach the CPU cooler to the motherboard.

5. Attach the RAM modules in the corresponding RAM slots.

6. Unscrew the side cover of the system unit (case).

7. Mount the Power Supply.

8. Position the motherboard in the case and screw it in place.

9. Install the system fans for intakes and exhaust.

10. Mount the Hard Disk Drive and the Optical Disk Drive.

11. Connect the cables to their respective slots.

12. Put back the side cover.

Disassembly

1. Prepare your workplace.

a. Gather Tools and Supplies
2. Unplug all cables connected from the monitor to the system unit.
3. Unscrew and remove the side cover.
4. Unplug all the cables connected to the motherboard, power supply and system unit.
5. Remove the Hard Disk Drive and Optical Disk Drive.
6. Uninstall the system fans.
7. Unscrew and Remove the motherboard.
8. Remove the power supply.
9. Remove the RAM modules from the RAM slots.
10. Unscrew the CPU cooler.
11. Remove the CPU from the CPU slot of the motherboard.
