LOW LTE-ADVANCED THROUGHPUT ANALYSIS

Problem Description
 There are 3 Carrier Aggregated sites in the Network but in spite of
secondary carrier activated CA e-Node B throughput was low 120
Mbps not as expected 230 Mbps.

 Carrier Aggregation Summary:

The Operator X has done Carrier Aggregation with the Attached
strategy:

PCC: Primary Component Carrier, When UE is configured for CA; it has only
one radio resource control (RRC) connection with the network via the PCell
At RRC connection establishment/reestablishment/
Handover, the PCell provides the non-access stratum (NAS) mobility
Information (e.g., tracking area identity [TAI])
SCC: Secondary Component Carrier, SCells may be configured once an RRC
connection is established and may be used to provide additional radio
resources, actually UE configured for CA connects to one primary serving cell
(PCell) and up to four secondary serving cells (SCells), to have total 100Mhz
of Bandwidth as per 3GPP Standards

Handling Process

>Throughput checked by speedtest.net and found low so first point of

investigation to check whether the Carrier aggregation that is secondary
component carrier is properly configured or not.
 Two cells to be added into a CA group must be configured as a neighboring cell of each
other

 LST CAGROUP CELL

The MML shows all the CA group are configured properly

The Secondary cell is configured also shown by UE

 The Low throughput may be due to the fact that SCC is configured but not activated
 eNodeB Scell active condition
From eNodeB FPD, only the packet RLC buffer and RLC packet delay achieve the threshold can

trigger Scell active.

Secondary cell activation condition

1. RLC data in buffer > max( RLC throughput per packet*

CaMgtCfg.ActiveBufferDelayThd, CaMgtCfg.ActiveBufferLenThd)

2. RLC packet delay > CaMgtCfg.ActiveBufferDelayThd

eNodeB setting before: ActiveBufferLenThd 9Kbyte, ActiveBufferDelayThd 50ms

The triggering threshold changed to new values so that Data Activation can occur earlier

New SCC Activation Threshold changed to ActiveBufferLenThd 6Kbyte,

ActiveBufferDelayThd 10ms

1. From 18:08:29- 18:08:59 we download files from FTP server , the downlink throughput

from transmission and downlink throughput(40Mbps)

Analysis: eNodeB in good RF condition (SINR>25dB), UU interface throughput

150Mbps,when eNodeB get packet from core and transmission(40Mbps),eNodeB can easily

send the packet to UE without delay, packet delay and buffer < default threshold,so Scell

can’t active.

2. From 18:09:04- 18:09:14 eNodeB use MML STR UUDATATST from eNodeB PDCP layer

send packet to UE(180Mbps).

3. Analysis:eNodeB get packet from core and transmission(180Mbps),one cell schedule

the packet (max 150mbps) will cause the packet delay and buffer easily reach trigger

threshold

The Secondary cell activation observed and high throughput recorded

Root Cause and Solutions:

The root cause is due to delay in triggering of Scell activation which leads to lower throughput,

once the buffer length is changed Throughput issue resolved.
