1. The 158,000-kg airplane is at rest on the ground (z = 0 is ground level). The landing gear
carriages are at A, B, and C. The coordinates of the point G at which the weight of the plane
acts are (3, 0.5, 5) m. ( 2.5 points)
a. What are the magnitudes of the normal reactions exerted on the landing gear by the
ground?

1.1 The next figure shows a simplified airplane landing gear unit with all members and loads
confined to one plane. The brace struts are pinned at each end and the support and C is of
the roller type, thus no vertical reaction can be produced by the support fitting at point C.
The member at C can rotate on the roller but horizontal movement is prevented. A known
load in the nose landing gear is applied to axle unit at A. The problem is to find the load in
the brace struts and the reaction at C.

1.2 Calculate the axial stress in the brace strut ED and FB knowing that has a uniform rectangular
transversal section of 40 mm thickness x 60 mm width.
1.3 Respect the next figure identifies what kind of joint is shown to calculate the average shear
stress developed in the pin used of 30 mm of diameter only in the brace strut FB.
1.4 The brace struts FB is manufactured in steel AISI 4340, the ultimate normal stress is 745
Mpa and the ultimate shearing stress of the pin used to the joint is 325 Mpa. Find the factor
of safety for the brace strut and the pin of the joint. According to the factor safety found,

what do you think about the number it´s a correct result, what changes do you propose to
obtain a feasible value if it´s the case?
