tropics, also known as Haematoxylum
Campechianum. The leaflets are slightly triangular,
pinnately compound, and the flowers are yellow. The
stem material contains hematoxylin (10%), which
becomes hematine when oxidized. Black dyeing is
also possible.
Catechu

distributed in eastern India. It contains a lot of tannins
and is also used as a tanned leather material.

cultivated as a feed for sericulture.

widely cultivated in tropical Asia. Male flowers have
150 to 250 fruits at the top and female flowers at the
bottom.
Clove

The place of origin is the Moluccas Islands of
Indonesia. It was prized as a fragrance. The clove tree
is an evergreen tree, and when the flower buds turn
red, the buds are picked and dried to be used as a dye.
 Japanese Pagoda tree

It is a leguminous deciduous tree native to northern
China and has been cultivated in Japan since ancient
times. The pale yellowish white buds that are applied
in summer is used for dyeing. The main pigment is
flavonol quercetin included as a glycoside rutin.
Lac color

It is obtained from a lac, red dye extracted from scale
insect which grows on lebbek, high trees in Africa,
India and Malaysia. The pigment is laccaic acid
anthraquinone and has a chemical structure very
similar to carmine, a cotinyl dye.In addition to the
pigment, a resin extract is also used as a brightener for
chocolate.
Myrobalan ork

forests from northern India. This fruit is used for
dyeing.
The orchid color on monk’s robe comes from
Myrobalan.
Rhus chinensis

A deciduous tree in the genus Nurude of the famil
y Rhus. The young leaf of the Nurude tree is infested
with aphids, and the galls formed by the stimulation
are called Rhus chinensis. It is also known as a raw
material of the hagfish that women used in the Edo
period.
Madder

Rubiaceae vine perennial plant. Widely distributed in
temperate regions of Asia. In Japan, there are madder
and madder pine that grow naturally in mountains and
fields south of the main island.
It is said to be the oldest red dye that contains
pigments such as purpurin and mundistine in its roots.
Gardenia

It is a perennial evergreen shrub of the Rubiaceae
family and has been used for a long time as an anti-
inflammatory, diuretic and hemostatic agent.
There are yellow dyes extracted from fruit and blue
dyes obtained by enzymatic treatment of the dyes.
