Are usually terrestrial, though
some are epiphytic or grow on rocks.
Most species have rhizomes and
fibrous roots. Unlike most other
orchids, the flowers characteristically
feature two fertile anthers (male,
pollen-producing structures) instead
of just one. The slipper-shaped lip of
the flower serves as a trap for
pollinating insects, forcing insect
visitors to climb past the
reproductive structures and deposit
or receive pollinia (pollen masses) to
fertilize the flower.

Helminthostachys Tungkod-langit Ophioglossaceae Is a terrestrial, herbaceous fern

zeylanica of southeastern Asia and Australia,
commonly known as kamraj and
tunjuk-langit. The species is like the
other members of its family, it has
clusters of sporangia on stems of
fertile, spike-like fronds.

Terminalia darlingii Malaputat Combretaceae A small tree growing up to 10m

high. Leaves are almost leathery and
spiraly arrange in dense cluster
towards the end of its branchlets.
Shiny glaborous leaves, shining green
above while under leaf is red or
brown.

Cycas curranii Curran pitogo Cycadaceae Is an evergreen species growing

to 3 meters tall. It is endemic to the
island of Palawan in the Philippines,
particularly in the catchment basin of
the Malinao River. Parts of the plant
are poisonous if ingested. The plant
also has spines and sharp edges on its
leaves; use caution when handling.
Pampanga State Agricultural University (PSAU)

Cycas wadei Wade's pitogo Cycadaceae Is readily distinguished by the

combination of its often-branched
habit, narrow leaflets (moatly 4-5
mm wide), usually 2-ovuled
megasporophylls and the distinctly
ribbed stony layer (sarcotesta) of its
seeds.

Hopea philippinensis gisok-gisok (general), Dipterocarpaceae They have a self-supporting

makatayring (Tagalog), growth form. They are listed as
baguatsa (Bikol) endangered by IUCN. They have
simple, broad leaves.

Rafflesia magnifica Rafflesia Rafflesiaceae This is a parasitic plant without

leaves and stem. The open flower is
58 to 60 cm diameter. The five
perigone lobes are dark orange with
white warts. The diaphragm has
distinct red lining along the margin.
The ramenta inside the tube are
dense.

Durio graveolens Red durian Malvaceae Upper canopy tree up to 43 m

tall and 85 cm dbh. Stipules present
but dropped early. Leaves alternate,
simple, penni-veined, golden lower
surface with clearly visible scales.
Flowers ca. 25 mm in diameter,
white-reddish, with 2-lobed epicalyx,
placed in cymes on the twigs below
the leaves. Fruits ca. 150 mm long,
yellow-reddish, capsule with long
spines, seeds enclosed in red aril.

Shorea astylosa Basilan yakal Dipterocarpaceae Is a medium to large tree

about 25 to 30 meters tall. Its wood is
hard and dark brownish-yellow, its
branchlets slender, blackish, and
slightly hairy. Its leaves are
coriaceous, ovate to lanceolate, or
oblong-lanceolate or apex acuminate.
Pampanga State Agricultural University (PSAU)

The base are rounded to cuneate,

glabrous above and slightly hairy
underneath. Its blade is 6.5-nine
centimeters long and two-4.5
centimeters wide, with its petiole
slender, 10-23 millimeters long, and
dark. Its inflorescence are axillary,
paniculate, and up to about six
centimeters long, with its flowers
yellow, very short-stalked, and about
12 millimeters long. The flowers'
petals are narrowly oblong or oblong-
lanceolate, more or less twisted in
bud, rounded at apex, 18 millimeters
long, and reticulate.

Dendrobium schuetzei Schuetze's Dendrobium Orchidaceae This is a really fine large

flowered species with well rounded
large flower segments that are in the
3-4 inch range in size. Likes
intermediate to warm temps and
year-round watering and fertilizing.
The flowers are waxy, long-lasting
and fragrant. The leaves have a nice
structure and the growth habit is
compact.

Pemphis acidula Elephant ears Araceae Moderately robust herb;

petiole to ca. 50 cm long, sheathing
in the lover third; blade
membranous, ovato-sagittate, ca. 40
cm long , very shallowly peltate;
anterior lobe ca. 30 cm long x 30 cm
wide at base, with about 4 primary
lateral veins on each side of the
anterior costa diverging at ca. 45-70°,
secondary veins flush on both sides
of the blade, arising from the primary
veins at ca. 70° and then deflected to
the amrgin, not or hardly forming
interprimary collective veins;
posterior costae diverging at an
obtuse angle; posterior lobes ca. Half
the length of the anterior, rounded,
with little laminar tissue on the

posterior side diverging at an obtuse

angle; posterior lobes ca. Half the
length of the anterior, rounded, with
little laminar tissue on the posterior
side of the posterior costae, but this
confluent across the sinus; glands in
the axils of the primary veins
inconspicuous or absent.

Kibatalia puberula Kibatalia Apocynaceae Is a cosmopolitan genus of

flowering plant in the carrot family,
whose species are known as water
parsnip, as are some other plants in
Apiaceae such as Sium latifolium and
Sium suave. It is easily confused with
the highly toxic water hemlock.
Water parsnip is a widespread
aquatic plant found across Eurasia,
Africa, North America, and
elsewhere. It is a perennial plant
forming stolons at the base where it
roots in mud, often underwater. It
extends hollow stems and umbels of
white flowers. The leaves are fernlike
and have several narrow to rounded
leaflets.

Cyathea contaminans Pakong-buwaya Cyatheaceae Is a tree fern that grows to 7

meters. Trunk is covered with black
and still interlacing roots. Leaves are
bipinnate up to 2.5 meters long. Leaf
stalk is stout, spiny, and purplish, up
to 90 centimeters long, covered with
dense scales when young.

Xanthostemon Mangkono Myrtaceae Is a tree growing up to 50 m

verdugonianus in height and 115 cm in bole
diameter. It can be found in
Southeast Asia particularly in the
Philippines and is currently
threatened by habitat loss. The bole
is very irregular, fluted, and bent.
Leaves are simple, relatively thick,

alternate, and obovate. The

inflorescence is red and located at
terminal branches. The fruits are
dehiscent with 2-3 lobes that split
into 2-3 sections when ripe. The
seeds are small and half-moon
shaped. No plant part is of medicinal
importance and edible. However, the
plant is mainly valued for its excellent
wood that is extremely hard, very
heavy, and probably the most
durable wood of the Philippines. It is
of superior quality and is used for
posts, piles, tool handles, wooden
tool parts, bowling balls, dumbbells,
paper weights, pulleys, rollers, etc.

Phalaenopsis lindenii Moth orchids Orchidaceae A small epiphytic orchid, it

has a pendant growth form and can
grow up to 25cm in length. The
leaves are pendant and are dark
green and mottled with silver-white
spots. The flowers are borne on an
erect to arching inflorescence, the
flowers bloom simultaneously and
are about 28mm in width. The
flowers have white sepals and petals
with pink stripes and spots. The
flower lip is white with a pink tip with
pink stripes running along the length.
HabitatIt is found growing in shady
location on trees in the forests of
North Luzon, Philippines.

as a food and source of material for
basketry, weaving etc.

Alocasia sanderiana Kris plant Araceae Is a tropical perennial with

upright shiny, V-shaped and deeply
lobed leaves. The plant can be up to 6
ft tall and large in its native tropical
habitat, but is much smaller in
