PIN HOLE
Procedure: -
• The top of the mouth on the column should be cut close to a node (use the diameter as
reference). Then, divide into four equal parts.Between the node and the end of the
column, draw a line around the surface. The distance from the end of the column and the
line should be the same as the radius of the beam.
• With your pencil, draw an approximate shape for your fish mouth. Hold the column and
saw along the diagonals.
• Then, carve out the mouth’s shape in upwards motions
• Take the third, smaller piece of bamboo. It will act as the tie between the column and
beam.
• Draw out its diameter on the beam, where the fish mouth will sit. Taking the chisel and
the mutik, carve out the “hole”. Slot the piece in, it should fit in tight and all the way
through to the opposite culm wall.
Then, drill and dowel.
• Slip the column over the smaller bamboo piece to secure the fish mouth to the beam.
Drill and dowel through the column and the small bamboo at opposite angles.
What is dowel joint?
=> The dowel joint is basically the same as the butt joint except dowels are used
to hold the two pieces of bamboo/wood together instead of screws and nails
Construct blind dowel joints by drilling the holes only partway into each piece
of bamboo/wood. Then drive the dowels into these holes and glue them into
position.
Advantages:-
• Very strong
• Easier to make
• These joints are hidden
• Dowling is a quick process.
• It helps to ensure a neat finish.
• There is no need for screws, nails or other equipment.
• Dowel joints are the strongest type of joints when it comes to woodworking,
especially when using multiple rows of dowels.
• Dowels help to create strong joints that are easy to make at home.
Disadvantages:-
• Tenon and mortise joints are stronger, but it takes a lot longer to create
• The alignment could be hard to get for beginners as it requires the use of a
dowelling.
Applications: -
• Furniture shelf supports
• Moveable game pieces
• Hangers for items such as clothing, key rings, and tools
• Wheel axles in toys
• Detents in gymnastics grips
