Goal: At this station you will model the Greenhouse Effect and explain how this relates
to deforestation
Instructions:
1. Take one large beaker and place a thermometer inside. Cover the top with plastic
wrap. Be sure to make a tight seal.
2. Take the second large beaker and place a thermometer inside. Carefully take the
small beaker and add approx. 25mL of vinegar. Add 2 scoops of baking powder to the
small beaker and AS QUICKLY AS POSSIBLE place the small beaker inside the large
one. Cover the top with plastic wrap. Be sure to make a tight seal.
3. Shine a light on both beakers. Get it as close as possible. Use a retort stand to hold
the lights if available.
4. Begin timing immediately.
5. After one minute, record the temperature inside both beakers on your worksheet.
Use the third thermometer to record the temperature under the light but outside the
beakers.
6. Continue for 10 minutes or until you are told to switch stations.
7. Complete the questions on your worksheet.

Questions:
1. How is the situation with Beaker 1 similar to the Greenhouse Effect?
2. What is the gas created from the reaction in the small beaker added to Beaker 2?
3. What gas do trees give off? What gas do trees take in?
4. How is the situation with Beaker 2 similar to the Greenhouse Effect PLUS deforestation?
5. What is different between the temperatures seen in Beaker 1 vs Beaker 2? What does this
tell you about deforestation?
