Scenario 1:

Sometime in September 2012, Sen. Vicente Sotto was accused of copying from someone else
a part of his privilege speech against the RH bill. A social media user called him out and
accused him of translating parts of a speech originally delivered by the late US senator, Robert
Kennedy.

Sought for comment, Sotto laughed off allegations he merely translated Kennedy's speech to
Filipino without attribution. Sotto said he wasn't aware the passage came from Kennedy. He
said a friend texted him the passage and finding it beautiful, he had it translated and included it
in his speech.

Scenario 1

Plagiarism is the practice of taking someone else’s work and making it as your own. In
this scenario, the principle that was being neglected is principle 6. It was stated that Sotto
copied his speech from another person making his work a product of plagiarism. In addition, he
did not give credits to the original owner of the speech. Even though Sotto’s alibi was that he
wasn’t aware where the passage came from, it is still inaccurate because in the first place, one
should research more about certain things especially if one is presenting is to the public.

Although plagiarism is not a criminal or civil offense, it is still illegal. I think that Sotto
should have done more research about the passage that he used. His defense in saying that
his friend texted it was never an excuse. He is a public figure, hence, making his words heard in
public. Moreover, in making a speech one should not rely in just merely a text because one will
never know where it came from. It is important to dig in through something to ensure an ethical
communication.
Scenario 2

Upon reading a notice that says, “To the handicapped persons,” you advised the office
responsible for posting the sign to change or remove it. The office asked you for the reason.

Scenario 2

One’s view about something is not exactly the same thing of others perspective. In this
scenario, the principle that was not followed is principle 1. It was said that I raised my concern
regarding the notice without evaluating and respecting others’ communication. Furthermore, I
think that I got the wrong idea of the sign and I impulsively addressed my concern without
thinking of others perspective about it.

People have different point of views from each other and we see things differently. I
think that all of us should respect each other’s communication and we should always
understand what a certain subject means to another person to avoid useless points about
something. One should always put in mind that it is important to be knowledgeably aware about
things that we encounter especially if we know that we may have a different view from other
people.
