Overview The Surface Safety Valve is used to shut in the flow

upstream of the choke manifold in case of emergency. It is operated

hydraulically which control by the Emergency Shut Down Device
(ESD)

When a remote station is activated the Emergency Shut down panel

acts as a receiver for the air signal. The unit translates this signal
into a hydraulic response which bleeds the control line pressure of
the actuator and close the fail safe close valve.
