Solve the following.

1. A 15-V DC source is connected across a 1-kΩ resistance.


i. Draw a schematic diagram.
ii. Calculate the current I through the resistance.
iii. How much current flows through the voltage source?
iv. If the voltage of the source is doubled, how much is the current I in the circuit?
2. A 240-Ω resistor is dissipating 5.4 W. Calculate:
i. The voltage across the resistor.
ii. The current through the resistor.
3. A current of 2 A flows through a 12-Ω resistance connected across a battery.
i. How much is the battery voltage?
ii. How much power is dissipated by the resistance?
iii. How much power is supplied to the battery?
4. Calculate the current I, in ampere (A) units for each of the following examples:
i. 66 V across 220 kΩ .
ii. 15 mV across 3 kΩ .
iii. 24 V across 120 Ω .
iv. 3 V across 10 kΩ .
v. 18 V across 18 kΩ .
vi. 15 kV across 1 MΩ .
5. Calculate the resistance R, in ohms for each of the following examples:
i. 1 mA drawn from a 12-V source.
ii. 4 mA drawn from a 15-V source.
iii. 150 mW dissipated with 36 V applied.
iv. 16.2 W dissipated with a current of 30 mA.
6. A 1000-ft length of wire has a conductance G of 0.4 S. if the wire is carrying a current I
of 10 A, calculate:
i. The resistance of the wire.
ii. The IR voltage drop across the wire.
iii. The power dissipated by the length of the wire.
7. Refer to the figure below. Draw a graph of the I and R values when R is varied in 2-Ω
steps from 2 to 12 Ω . (V is constant at 12 V).

8. Calculate the hot resistance of a 60-W light bulb connected to the 120-V power line.
9. What is the maximum current that can be allowed to flow through a 680-Ω ¼ -W resistor
without exceeding its power dissipation rating?
10. How much current is drawn by a 2-W electric clock connected to the 120-V power line?
11. A 1.8-kΩ resistor has a current of 25 mA. How much power is dissipated by the resistor?
12. Determine the resistance and wattage ratings of a resistor to meet the following
requirements: 5-V IR drop with a current I of 25 mA. When choosing the wattage rating,
use a safety factor of 2.
13. What value of resistance dissipates 250 mW of power when its current equal 50 mA?
