Bisecting Lines, Angles and Arcs

After learning fundamental geometrical concepts, you will now be acquainted with the skills
involved in geometrical construction. One of the basic skills you will need in geometric construction is
bisecting. Bisecting means dividing a line, an angle, or an arc into two equal parts.

To Bisect accurately and properly, you will need a compass, a ruler, and a pencil. Accuracy
and neatness should always be observed when bisecting angles, lines and arcs. Observe the
following rules when you bisect lines, angles and arcs.

How to Bisect a Line

1. Draw line AB.
2. Set your compass to a measure that is more than half the length of line AB.
3. Using A as the center, draw arc CD across line AB.
4. Using B as the center, draw another arc (arc EF) that will intersect arc CD.
5. Draw a line connecting the intersections of the two arcs to bisect line AB.

Activity:

Directions: Based on the information you have learned, answer the following questions. Write your
answers in a. one (1) whole sheet of paper.

1. What is bisecting? (2 points)

2. What are the needed instruments in bisecting a lines, angles and arcs? (3 points)
3. What are the (5) five rules on how to bisect a line? (5 points)
