The table compares the proportion of money spent on five different household expenses in Britain and Hong Kong in 2000.

In Britain, the greatest single expense was other goods and services (36%) ,while in Hong Kong only 28 per cent went to this

sector. By contrast, in Hong Kong the largest percentage of the total expenditure was spent on housing, amounting to 32%, in

contrast to a mere 18% in Britain. Food ranked second in Britain, at 22% but this accounted for a higher percentage in Hong

Kong (27%).

In Britain transport took up nearly a fifth of their household budget, the average British household spending 17% on this.

However, in Hong Kong, Just 9% was distributed to this sector. Clothing was the smallest expense in both Britain and Hong

Kong, 7% and 4% respectively.

It is clear from the data that overall, in both countries, accommodation, food and other goods and services were the major

expenses, whereas only a fraction of their total expenditure was allocated to travelling and clothes. (170 words)
