HERITAGE DOCUMENTATION & ARCHITECTURAL
CONSERVATION

ABSTRACT

Heritage is something that can be passed on from one generation to another. It is something
that can be conserved and treasured and something that has historic and cultural value.
The word heritage can also be described as not an enquiry in past but a celebration of it.
Our aim is to describe different perspectives or takes on what heritage is and how it can
be described through various takes and point of views. The aim is also to discuss the
distinction between mediums of documentation and practices of heritage. Furthermore, in
what terms can the interpretation of heritage in modern terms be done and what is our role
as students and as professionals in the future. Documentation is a part of the process of
conservation and linking the present to the glorious history. Heritage, its preservation and
the desire to keep heritage alive leads to the development of cultural richness and a brighter
future of any nation. It enhances and contributes towards a nation’s identity. This study
mainly describes various methods, techniques and technology that help in carrying out
one of the most crucial parts i.e. documentation. It also addresses the aim behind each
method and further segregates it for better understanding. Documentation, recording and
learning about a country’s rich tangible and intangible heritage should be carried out
because: Such references can provide and act as a guide for conservators, students,
professionals and/or keen individuals. The documentation can help other individuals
around the world to learn about their country and the treasure around the world. It also
gives one a chance to revisit history and learn more about it. The process helps in getting
recognition on a larger platform as well as smaller platforms and offers an opportunity to
display all the varied and interesting assets. It inculcates a sense of appreciation in students
and individuals towards their country’s heritage and a sense of responsibility in being a
contribution towards the same, as well as helps artisans in getting the recognition they
deserve.
