1. LEARNING OBJECTIVES

At the end of the session, the students can:

1.1. have a clear understanding of the course learning outcomes,

course content, class management , and requirements.
1.2. have clear guidelines on how to study and comply with the
requirements of Solid Mensuration.

INTRODUCTION

Hello class… Welcome to Math 114-Solid Mensuration. I am your

instructor, Eriberto B. Hallarsis who will facilitate learning in this
class. It’s my 25th years in the College of Engineering and
Technology.

I hope that you will develop a deeper appreciation and interest

in this course which is essential in the field of engineering. We
BES 119 Course Guide Page 1 of 10
will know more about Solid Mensuration as we continue with
our class sessions.

This course will use flexible learning approach (synchronous -

real time interaction with teacher and classmates and
asynchronous – independent study/tasks by individual student
or small group work). It is therefore important that you
familiarize with the mode of delivery of instruction and the
guidelines that go with it including netiquette for online learning.

2. ACTIVITY
Think-Ink-Share

1. List what you expect to learn in this Solid Mensuration course.

Note: Some of you will then be asked to share your answers. You are given three (3)
minutes for this activity. (A short discussion of student responses follows)

After you have articulated your expectations in this class, let’s

have our orientation about the course learning outcomes,
content and requirements based on the syllabus. We may not
cover all aspects of the study of our subject but I assure you that
we will focus on the essential topics. We will also discuss class
session management and how you can make the most of learning
Statistics using flexible learning approach.

Are you ready to start?

4. ACQUISITION OF NEW KNOWLEDGE

4.1. Course Description:

This course deals with the properties and solution of surface
area and volumes of solids like cubes, parallelepiped, prism,
cylinders, pyramids, cones, frustums of pyramid and cone
and truncated prism (or cylinder), prismatoid, sphere and
solution of similar figure.

4.2. Course Learning Outcomes:

At the end of the course, students should be able to:

(a) use the formula, concept and properties of the different

shapes and figures learned in Solid Mensuration
(b) apply the necessary (appropriate) shapes and figures in
designing and building construction.

4.3. Course Content:

4.4. Course Packs:

The course packs are generally organized into the following

sections:

LEARNING OBJECTIVES – This part contains the objectives of

each lesson/module. These include the learning competence,
content standards, observable behavior, audience, and criterion
level.

INTRODUCTION – This gives an overview or a brief background

of the lesson/module. It enhances further the focus of the
lesson/module and clarity of the challenge.

ACTIVITY– This is the first part of the lesson. It involves you

(the students) in an activity either individual or as a group (can
be done using SCHOOLOGY). In this phase, you are engaged in a
learning exercise, meant to tap prior knowledge and experience
as well as spark interest in the topic.
BES 119 Course Guide Page 4 of 10
ACQUISITION OF NEW KNOWLEDGE – This is instructor’s my)
part during synchronous session (online) live chat or live lecture,
where new information is presented and students should be
learning or acquiring new information.

ASSIGNMENT/APPLICATION – In this part, you will practice

what you have learned. This is the phase for the transfer of
learning. If you gained mastery of concepts, theories and
principles, you should show evidence of learning in this part of
the lesson or module by applying what you have learned in the
real life situation. Hence, I prepared worksheets, written or
activity tasks and for asynchronous session

ASSESSMENT – You are tested to see how much you have

learned and determine if there are gaps in understanding
through online quiz or based on (students’ submission of the
tasks given during asynchronous session).

FURTHER READINGS/ REFERENCES – List of books, articles,

research journals and online sources/
Our Textbook can be found online
Solid mensuration by Willis F. Kern and James R. Bland.

4.5. Class Management:

 Synchronous session will be one (1) hour per week and
asynchronous activities.
 Asynchronous session is the time where you are going to do
your assignments, projects and other homework activities.

BES 119 Course Guide Page 5 of 10

 We will start our class on time (1:00PM to 2:00PM) so be
ready to log in at least five minutes before the start of our
class session.
 Inform me by SMS (Short Message Service/text) if you are
having problems with your internet connections. Class
sessions are recorded to allow you to catch up with the rest
of the class.
 The class session starts and ends with a prayer. Each of you
will get to lead the prayer. Prayer leader will be in
alphabetical order.
 Course Pack for each lesson will be uploaded in our
Materials.
 You are expected to study the course pack and actively
participate during the class session. Focus your attention to
your class and avoid external disturbances.
 The teacher will provide inputs and pose essential questions
during the synchronous sessions which you need to answer
immediately. This is also part of your assessment.
 Assignments will be given and you need to accomplish
during your own free time (asynchronous).
 Assessments will be both announced and unannounced so
study regularly.
 Feel free to ask questions and further clarifications during
the class session.
 You can also consult me by sending an email or by SMS/text
(see information at the start of this course guide).
You can also pose your question/s in our Discussion
Board.

Remember I am not available online 24/7. I am not also
available during weekends. Take note that our
Consultation time is MON (9:00 – 12:00) PM
 Further readings are provided in the course pack but you
are not limited to them. You can access a wide range of
learning resources online.

4.6. Class Attendance:

We have 16 synchronous sessions per semester so you are all
expected to be present during the real-time class sessions.
Inform me if you are absent. Tardiness and early leaving from
the class sessions are also recorded.

You have to plan your schedule for the asynchronous sessions

(you all have the time but you have to manage it because you
also have other subjects to attend to) doing research,
worksheets or assignments.

4.7. Submission of Requirements:

 Submit requirements on time. Deductions (20% of the total
score) will be made for late submissions (not more than 3
days, after which, this will no longer be accepted).
 No special quiz or exam will be given if you missed the
assessment schedule.
 Special midterm or final exam is given only for very valid
reasons.

4.8. Academic Integrity

BES 119 Course Guide Page 7 of 10

The attempt by any student to present as his/her own work
which he/she has not produced is regarded as a serious offense.
Students are considered to have cheated if they turn in an
assignment written in whole or in part by someone else.
Students are guilty of plagiarism, intentional or not, if they copy
from books, magazines, Internet, or other sources without
identifying and acknowledging those sources or if they
paraphrase ideas from such sources without acknowledging
them.

Students enrolled in this course who cheat on exams or quizzes

or commit plagiarism, or copy another students work in any
way, violate the Academic Integrity policy of the University and
will receive an F (0 points) on the test or assignment in question.
In addition, they will be reported to the College Dean for
appropriate sanction.

4.9. Course Requirements:

Written exams (mid and final terms) 40%

Class work 60%
Class participation and attendance 10%
Quizzes/Assignments- 10%
Plates/Worksheets - Case Study 40%
Total 100%

Note:

 Students should provide their own Personal computers
(laptops or desktops).
 Quizzes are scheduled with the use of Schoology
 Assignments and outputs are required to pass on time. (Be
guided of the submission time as it is stated in your
assignment)

Percentage allocation may change. Asynchronous tasks and

other requirements will be sent to you later.

4.10. COURSE TOOLS

5. APPLICATION

To be a successful online student, it is important that you

apply the guidelines on online learning in all your courses.
Read carefully the attached files on Preparing Students for
Online Learning and Netiquette Guide for Online Courses.
They provide helpful tips and strategies to succeed in your
flexible learning experience. We will apply them in this course
so be guided accordingly.
