This widespread problem of water pollution is jeopardizing our
health. Unsafe water kills more people each year than war and all
other forms of violence combined. Meanwhile, our drinkable water
sources are finite: Less than 1 percent of the earth’s freshwater is
actually accessible to us. Without action, the challenges will only
increase by 2050, when global demand for freshwater is expected
to be one-third greater than it is now.
While most Americans have access to safe drinking water,
potentially harmful contaminants have been found in the tap water
of every single state in the nation. Still, we’re not hopeless against
the threat to clean water. Water pollution occurs when harmful
substances often chemicals or microorganisms contaminate a
stream, river, lake, ocean, aquifer, or other body of water,
degrading water quality and rendering it toxic to humans or the
environment. Water is uniquely vulnerable to pollution. Known as
a “universal solvent,” water is able to dissolve more substances
BY LOKESH SHARMA than any other liquid on earth.
It’s also why water is so easily polluted. Toxic substances
from farms and factories readily dissolve into and mix with
it, causing water pollution. Pollution can enter water
directly, through both legal and illegal discharges from
factories or imperfect water treatment plants. Spills and
leaks from oil pipelines or hydraulic fracturing (fracking)
operations can degrade water supplies. Wind, storms, and
littering especially of plastic waste can also send debris
into waterways. Water pollution can result in human
health problems, poisoned wildlife, and long-term
ecosystem damage. When agricultural and industrial
runoff floods waterways with excess nutrients such as
nitrogen and phosphorus, these nutrients often fuel algae
blooms that then create dead zones, or low-oxygen areas
where fish and other aquatic life can no longer thrive.

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has turned into a
global human tragedy and economic devastation.
Governments have implemented lockdown measures,
blocked international travel, and enforced other public
containment measures to mitigate the virus morbidity and
mortality. As of today, no drug has the power to fight the
infection and bring normalcy to the utter chaos. This leaves
us with only one choice namely an effective and safe vaccine
that shall be manufactured as soon as possible and available
to all countries and populations affected by the pandemic at
an affordable price. There has been an unprecedented fast
track path taken in Research & Development by the World
community for developing an effective and safe vaccine.
Platform technology has been exploited to develop
candidate vaccines in a matter of days to weeks, and as of
now, 108 such vaccines are available. Six of these vaccines
BY LOKESH SHARMA have entered clinical trials.
As clinical trials are “rate-limiting” and “time-
consuming”, many innovative methods are in practice
for a fast track. These include parallel phase I-II trials
and obtaining efficacy data from phase IIb trials. Human
“challenge experiments” to confirm efficacy in humans
is under serious consideration. The availability of the
COVID-19 vaccine has become a race against time in the
middle of death and devastation. There is an
atmosphere of tremendous hype around the COVID-19
vaccine, and developers are using every moment to
make claims, which remain unverified. However,
concerns are raised about a rush to deploy a COVID-19
vaccine. Applying “Quick fix” and “short cuts” can lead
to errors with disastrous consequences.

Unemployment is an economic condition in which individuals actively seeking jobs
remain un-hired. With the passage of time, it has become worse especially after the
global economic crisis, and it has become a threat to social development, whilst
consideration must be given to global economics. The International Labour
Organization (ILO) estimates that 178 million women and men are officially counted as
unemployed in 2007 and another billion or more people are underemployed or
working low wage jobs. These numbers have increased to 212 million in late 2009.
There are many causes contribute to this global key concern such as increased
population, rapid technological change, lack of education or skills and rising cost.
The term unemployment is used to describe anyone who is able to work but doesn’t
have an occupation. Unemployment is one of the most common and chronic problems
worldwide. It is a concern for individuals as well as global communities.
Unemployment is expressed as percentage of the total available work force that is
unemployed, but actively seeking employment and willing to work which is known as
the unemployment rate. The Bahrain’s unemployment rate has dropped from an
estimated average of 16.4 percent in 2006 to 3.7 percent in 2010 (Minister of Labour
BY LOKESH SHARMA
Dr. Majeed Al Alawi, 2010).
Basically, there are five types of unemployment: frictional unemployment, cyclical
unemployment, structural unemployment, real wage or classical unemployment, and
seasonal unemployment. The level of unemployment varies with economic conditions
and other circumstances. There are four main causes of unemployment. Firstly, the
increased population which leads to higher unemployment rates. In this situation the
demand for work will be more than the available occupations. This will result in
increased number of unemployed individuals. As the number of people who are
looking for jobs is increasing, it is getting more difficult to arrange jobs. Many jobs
which were handled by hands are being done by different machines and technology
nowadays. The new advanced technology replaced the low skilled or unskilled workers
in different factories. This made production faster and more accurate, but it resulted in
more unemployed people.
