COMPETENCIES COVERED

The book, English of the New Generation (World Literature), provided by the

Sunshine Interlinks Publishing house, Incorporated should target the textbook content

in the aspect of language objectives and the development of the effectiveness of the

language competencies applied in the presentation and elaboration of the skills and

informations. Thus, the competencies covered by the book which is the Real-based

Education Curriculum (RBEC) should be seen as it was designed by the Department

of Education for the effectivity of the book as an instructional material.

Program Standards

The program standards of this type of curriculum aims to develop the literary and

communicative competence of one learner for his/her understanding on the different

genres of World Literature and relate it with some texts on Philippine Literature for a

deeper appreciation on the Filipino and Foreign culture. But, the book only consists

texts of Foreign Literature which led to the conclusion that primarily the text book

fails to follow the program standard. Moreover, the whole chapter only consists of

essays and excerpts from legends and myths of Greek literature limiting the genres the

student should be able to know in the first quarter.

General Standard

According to the curriculum, the language focus to be seen in the book--on

Quarter 1 which was obviously, the unit I of the textbook--was the learners’

demonstration to the usage of simple past tense, time marker, WH question, S-V

Agreement, direct discourse, and reported speech but the book only explored S-V

Agreement (can be seen on page 78-80). Hence, the book does not totally follow the

competencies it should cover.

However, it follows the competencies for literature that it is all about narratives

as it all tackled stories from Greek Literature.
