BIASES AND SENSITIVITY

The book, English of the New Generation (World Literature), provided by the

Sunshine Interlinks Publishing house, Incorporated might show biases, e.g. gender

biases, racial biases, language biases, and/or political incorrectness that would not be

appropriate for the learners’ acquisition of knowledge as well as their involvement in

the social issues gathering in today’s period. This might also look into cultural

sensitivity, inclusivity or exclusivity, stereotyping, among other social issues.

Biases

Religion is an organized system of beliefs that is very important to a person.

Perhaps, we have lots of institution promoting their own religion. Thus, they only

consider what they are believing, making others to be left out.

In the textbook, evaluators come out to the idea that the book came from a

catholic school wherein it promotes Catholicism, whereas it became bias to Catholics.

On page 29, first sentence of the second paragraph on the Interface part, here you can

see the sentence modifier, As Catholics. So, the evaluators come to a question that

what if a student was not a Catholic, what would he feel? What if he is an Iglesia ni

Cristo (INC) believer? What if he is a Born again Christian? What if he is a Saksi ni

Jehova? Or what if he is a Muslim? What would they feel? Yes, there might be no

non-catholic student would go in a Catholic school but the textbook itself locks the

students to the idea that Catholics are the main religion and there are no religion

should be kept.

Another is that it promotes believing in a God. On the same page, page 29,

second to the last sentence of the same paragraph, it used the word We which people
can associate it to all person that would read the book. What if the reader is an

Atheist? What if he is not believer?

So, there are lots of things to be consider. The school, or even the textbook,

should not hold religion since it is a form of a belief and nobody should control one’s

belief.
