NOTE: This is part of your performance task in preparation of identifying the quantity of your
chosen product.
Instructions: Determine if the following is a one-to-one function and if its one-to-one function
solve for the inverse. If not, explain why.
x−5
1. f ( x )=
2
X- intercepts : (5,0)
−5
Y-intercepts : (0, )
2
2. f ( x )=x – 11
X- intercepts : (11,0)
Y-intercepts :(0,-11)
Function: one to one
Inverse:
y=x −11
x= y −11
y=x +11
f ❑−1 (x)=x +11
3. f ( x )=x 2+ 1
X- intercepts : there are no x-intercepts
Y-intercepts : (0,1)
Example:
1. f ( x )=x +3
Let us use this function f ( x )=x +3 to solve for y.

Note: {We assign 5 different values for x to solve for y.}
● If x=−2
Then, f (−2 )=−2+3=1
● If x=−1
Then, f (−1 ) =−1+3=2
● If x=0
Then, f ( 0 )=0+3=3
● If x=1
Then, f ( 1 ) =1+ 3=4
● If x=2
Then, f ( 1 ) =2+ 3=5

Using the horizontal line test we conclude that the function f ( x )=x +3 is one-to-one since it
intersect at one point only.
