Impact of stress on job satisfaction:

Job satisfaction represents a combination of positive and negative that the employees have
towards their work. Negative and unfavorable attitudes towards the job indicate job
dissatisfaction (Armstrong, 2006) Job satisfaction is a worker’s sense of achievement and
success on the job. It is generally perceived to be directly linked to productivity as well as to
personal well-being. Job satisfaction implies doing a job one enjoys, doing it well and being
rewarded for one’s efforts. Job satisfaction further implies enthusiasm and happiness with
one’s work. Job satisfaction is the key ingredient that leads to recognition, income, promotion,
and the achievement of other goals that lead to a feeling of fulfillment (Kaliski,2007) Workplace
stress is one of the reasons of workplace health risk of the employees and their turnover. (Paul,
2002; Danna and Griffin, 2002) Job satisfaction is to what extent someone feels self-motivated,
content and satisfied with his/her work. People who face stressed at their work places are
highly dissatisfied with their work and it decreases productivity increasing the turnover rate.

Negative effect of stress includes reduced efficiency, decreased capacity to perform, reduced
interest in working, and increased rigidity of thought, a lack of concern for the organization and
colleagues, and a loss of responsibility which leads to job dissatisfaction and greater chance to
leave the organization. (Fairbrother & Warn, 2003) Investigations of the causal relationship
between organizational commitment and job satisfaction have yielded contradictory
findings. (Mark, 2010) Each of the four dimensions of empowerment as well as the psycho
physiological outcomes of job stress, meaning, self-determination, and competence all are
connected to job satisfaction (Spreitzer et al., 1997). A research was conducted on relationship
between stress, satisfaction and empowerment within a call center. It was found that low level
of empowerment leads to mental distress. Whenever employees don’t get the opportunity to
empower them, they eventually get demotivated. They suffer from inferiority complex. These
emotions and lack of empowerment reduces job satisfaction. Thus, stress leads people to
dissatisfaction. Correctional job stress has negative impact on the organizations, at the same
time it has a positive connection with turnover intent (Dowden & Tellier, 2004; Slate & Vogel,
1997). Job stress maintains a positive relation with turnover rate. Extreme stress can make
employees feel giving up on the job and finally he might not any better option other than
switching the organization. That’s how, turnover rate increases. If employees get satisfied with
their job, they will rarely switch their job. Stress leads to dissatisfaction, and dissatisfaction
increases turnover rate of an organization.

Stress workload, role conflict, workload and physical environment have a negative impact on
employees’ job satisfaction. (Mansoor, Ahmed, Nasir, & Fida, 2011). Stressors (workload,
conflict at work, physical environment) can be very stressful for employees and affect job
satisfaction, and ultimately employees might end up switching the job. Job satisfaction means
whether the employees are complacent with their work or not. If employees don’t feel satisfied
with their workplace, they will not feel motivated to stay in that place. It will eventually
decrease their productivity. Eliminating stressors can have a very positive effect on productivity.
If elimination is not possible then mitigating can be a very strong choice. Moreover, stress has a
very powerful influence to job satisfaction along with productivity (Applebaum, Fowler, Fiedler,
Osinubi, & Robson, 2010). One of the stressors is conflict at work or role conflict influences job
satisfaction extremely. Conflict at workplace may arise when two or more simultaneous and
unsuited expectations exist in a way that in accord to a given role compromises fulfilling other
roles. A survey was conducted on health employees, it was found that job stress is one of the
most significant health risks for employees, and job satisfaction really matters in terms of
providing superior performance at hospitals. Heavy workload and lack of job autonomy have a
negative relationship with job satisfaction, while feedback and eliminating stressors can have a
very positive effect on job satisfaction. (Trivellas, Reklitis, & Platis, 2013)
