Q1 Consider a metal single crystal oriented such that the normal to the slip plane and the slip direction
are at angles of 43.1° and 47.9°, respectively, with the tensile axis. If the critical resolved shear
stress is 20.7 MPa, will an applied stress of 45 MPa cause the single crystal to yield? If not, what
stress will be necessary?
Q2 A single crystal of a metal that has the BCC crystal structure is oriented such that a tensile stress is
applied in the [0 1 0] direction. If the magnitude of this stress is 2.75 MPa, compute the resolved
shear stress in the [ ̅ ] direction on each of the (1 1 0) and (1 0 1) planes. On the basis of these
resolved shear stress values, which slip system(s) is (are) most favorably oriented to initiate plastic
deformation?
Q3 In an FCC single crystal, the tensile axis is along the [1 2 ] direction. Determine the slip plane (h k
l) that is most favourably oriented for slip to start at the lowest applied tensile stress. Assume, the
slip is happening along [1 1 0] direction.
Q4 The lower yield point for an iron that has an average grain diameter of 5 × 10-2 mm is 135 MPa. At
a grain diameter of 8 × 10-3 mm, the yield point increases to 260 MPa. At what grain diameter will
the lower yield point be 205 MPa?

Q5 A polycrystalline cylindrical iron bar is consisting of two types of BCC grains such that [0 0 ]
direction of grain 1 and [ 0 ] direction of grain 2 is parallel to the longitudinal axis of the
cylinder. Critical resolved shear stress (CRSS) for iron is 20 MPa. Find out the yield strength of the
material when the tensile load is applied along the longitudinal axis of the cylinder. Ignore the
effect of other defects present within the crystal including grain boundary. Also find out the active
slip system for both the grains.

Q6 Calculate the activation energy for vacancy formation in aluminum, given that the equilibrium
number of vacancies at 500°C is 7.57 × 1023 m-3. The atomic weight and density (at 500°C) for
aluminum are, respectively, 26.98 g/mol and 2.62 g/cm3.

Q7 The dislocation density in a copper sample is increased by cold working (due to plastic
deformation) from 109 m/m3 to 1013 m/m3. Calculate the stored energy of the crystal. The lattice
parameter and shear modulus for copper are 3.61 Å and 45.5 GPa respectively.
