PREDICTING THE PROBABILITY OF A TEAM MAKING IT
TO IPL PLAYOFFS.

OBJECTIVE
• Predicting the possibility of a team qualifying for the play-offs of the Indian
Premier League (IPL).
• Using the KPIs to identify top teams with most runs, wickets and wins.
• To understand the factors behind team performance and help emulate a
team that is bound to get more points during the season.

SCOPE
Our audience are the team owners and the team management who invest so much of
money and time in the hopes of qualifying for the play-offs and winning the IPL. Hence the
scope is very wide and can help all the teams to focus more on the factors which make
sures that their team qualifies for the play-offs. Also, KPIs will help the team management
to pick the top performing players while selecting the team for the forthcoming year.

The future scope of our project would be to use these KPIs as a framework for team
managements to use while picking players for their auction. These KPIs could help them
select the correct players to their team who could help them win the elusive title. To make
the study even more accurate we could even consider more KPIs in the future such as the
contribution made to the team by the foreign players or the number of maidens bowled by
the team’s bowlers. The future scope for this project is endless as more and more data
analysis is being done in sports every day. Teams have even started hiring profession data
analyst for consultation purposes.

Time period: 2018-2019

The data is related to performance of various teams in the previous editions of the
Indian Premier League. The performance of the team is measured as a combination of the
performance of the batsmen and bowlers. We have identified a few KPIs for the batsman,
bowler and the team as a whole and have mentioned the same below.
KEY PERFORMANCE INDICATORS

In cricket, the key factor for a team to win a match is the runs scored by the
batsman. The team which scores higher among the two is the winner of the match. Another
key factor that indirectly decides the winner is the number of wickets taken by the bowlers.
Getting more wickets of the opponent team invariably helps in minimizing the number of
runs scored by the opposition. Hence, the major factors that contribute to a team’s win in a
cricket match are the total runs scored by its batsmen and the total wickets taken by its
bowlers. Thus, we have considered these two factors as KPIs to predict the probability of a
team making to the playoffs of the IPL. Along with it, another factor that to be considered in
any match is the venue where the match is played. The home team has the advantage of better
knowledge on the wicket and home support. Thus, we have considered the percentage of
home and away wins as a KPI.

 Total Runs Scored

Here we have considered the total runs scored by the team in all the league
matches combined. Comparing the aggregate of the total runs scored by teams in the league
matches, we identify the teams with highest number of runs scored and identify if the total
number of runs scored in all league matches combined has a relationship with the team
entering playoffs by identifying how many teams from the top 4 of the points table (that have
made to the playoffs) are the teams with highest runs scored in all league matches combined.
From this, we get an idea of how probable a team is to get in the playoffs based on the total
number of runs scored in the league matches.

 Total Wickets Taken

We have considered the total wickets taken by the team in all the league
matches combined. Comparing the aggregate of the total wickets taken by teams in the league
matches, we identify the teams with highest number of wickets taken and identify if the total
number of wickets taken in all league matches combined has a relationship with the team
entering playoffs by identifying how many teams from the top 4 of the points table (that have
made to the playoffs) are the teams with highest wickets taken in all league matches
combined. From this, we get an idea of how probable a team is to get in the playoffs based on
the total number of wickets taken in the league matches.

 Home/Away Matches Win Percentage

Though a home win is very important for a team, an away win is more
significant as the team plays in relatively unfamiliar conditions with less support from the
crowd. So, we have considered both – the percentage of home wins and that of away wins
to identify if these factors re related to the probability of a team making it to the playoffs
of the Indian Premier League. Comparing the percentage of home and away wins of all
teams in the 14 matches (7 played at home and 7 played away), we identify how many
teams from the top 4 of the points table (that have made to the playoffs) are the teams with
highest home win percentage and away win percentage in the 14 league matches played.
From this, we get an idea of how probable a team is to get in the playoffs based on the
home and away win percentage in league matches.
DASHBOARD:

For this project we had used Power BI software to create our dashboard. We had used
the data of the teams for the year 2015, 2018 and 2019 (2016 and 2017 were excluded because
of the suspension of the team RR and CSK). However, in our dashboard due to space
constraints and to avoid cluttering we have displayed the graphs of the team’s performances
for the year 2018 and 2019 alone.
To make the dashboard dynamic we have established a link between the team
performance between the years using the team names as the primary key. This helps us with a
better visualization in the dashboard.

After establishing the links between the different sheets, we then use this to plot our
graphs and draw our conclusion. For our project we plotted 3 graphs each for the year 2015,
2018 and 2019. As mentioned earlier we have only used the data from 2018 and 2019 to
display in our dashboard. The first graph plotted was the home match win percentage and the
away match win percentage for each team. The second graph was the total runs scored by the
team during the league stage of the tournament and the final graph was the total wickets taken
by the team for the league stage of the tournament.
The above image represents our dashboard and includes the graphs of the team’s
performance for the year 2018 and 2019 based on their home and away matches win
percentage and the total runs scored by the team and the total wickets taken by the team during
the league stage of the tournament.

HOME/AWAY WIN PERCENTAGE FOR 2018:

The above graph represents the percentage of the matches the respective teams won
while playing in their home ground fixture and while playing in their away fixtures. From the
graph you can infer that the out of the top 4 teams with the highest home match win
percentages which are SRH (86%), CSK (71%), KKR (71%), KXIP (71%) 3 of these teams
were able to qualify to the playoff stages of the tournament. The reason for KXIP not
qualifying for the playoffs would be due to their away win percentage. Therefore, when we
focus on the away win percentage, we can see that Rajasthan Royals (RR) have the highest
win percentage of 71% and this factor was deterministic in the making the playoffs.
Therefore, the overall conclusion we can draw from this graph is that for a team to
qualify they must either have very good home win percentage or a very high away win
percentage or the team must have an average win percentage of 50% combined on both
their home and away win percentage.

TOTAL WICKETS TAKEN IN 2019:

In the above graph we have represented the total number of wickets taken by
the respective teams in the year 2019. The teams which qualified for the playoffs in this season
was CSK, DC, MI and SRH and as we can see they are also the same 4 teams which managed
to get the most number of wickets during the league stage with 111, 111, 98, 89 wickets
respectively. A similar trend was observed in the previous years as well but not all 4 teams
managed to pick the most number of wickets. However, in some cases only 3 out of the 4
qualified teams were able to secure a top 4 spot in the most wickets taken.
Recommendations with the managerial applications

We recommend teams to focus on the Key Performance Indicators or KPIs that we mentioned
earlier,
(i) Total Runs:
Total runs scored is an important KPI for the league stages as it allows you a greater
chance to get qualified for the playoffs.
Our recommendation to the team is to focus on a team that has batsmen that are
capable to score the maximum runs possible. To do this, they need to pick up players that are
compatible with each other that can form good partnerships which can lead to higher amounts
of runs scored which eventually, will increase the chances of the teams to qualify for the
playoffs from the league stages.

(ii) Total Wickets:

Total wickets are yet another important KPI for the teams to get a chance to qualify for
the playoffs that need to be considered here.
Our recommendation is for the coaches and players to focus on a series of factors as
taking wickets is not just the bowler’s task, but the entire team needs to put in inputs for the
same. Wicket Keeper, the catches were taken or missed, run-outs did or missed effects the win
probability by a huge margin. People don’t say catches win matches for no reason.
So, to take a high number of wickets in the league stages of any IPL season can be achieved
when the team works together to stop the other team at the as low score as possible.

(iii) Home and Away wins:

This is a different KPI where the team really doesn’t have much to change the
circumstances as all teams get 7 Home and 7 Away matches.
The teams do have an advantage of knowing the home pitches better that gives them an
advantage over the away team, it’s just that they get the same and equal advantage when they
have their home matches.
What can be done is encouraging fans to show as much support as possible which boosts
players' confidence and the same shows in their performance.

Overall, the inference we can gather from these performance indicators is that
for a team to make it to the playoff a team must focus on its overall team performance and
not just on the individual performance. Therefore, when a team management is trying to
build a team, they must focus on buying players who are more suited for their team rather
than focusing on buying players who have the better stats. An example of this strategy would
be the team Chennai Super Kings (CSK) who have been one of the most consistent teams in
the IPL who tend to focus on buying players who are more suited for their team rather than
focusing on buying the player with the most runs scored in that season or the most wickets
taken during that season.
