Orientation Module Unit 1 Video 1 Transcript

MATTIAS HOLWEG: Hello, I'm Matthias Holweg, the American Standard Companies
Professor of Operations Management and a fellow here at Christ Church. It's my great
pleasure to officially welcome you to the Oxford Artificial Intelligence programme. I hope
this will be a tremendous learning journey for you. It's a great pleasure to have you with
us.

Now, I'm standing here in Christ Church college, and you might argue why am I standing
in a college that dates back to the 1546, in fact when it was founded by Henry the eighth.
Now, what's special about Oxford are its 38 colleges and here the scholars and fellows
come together from all across the disciplines. And it's that tradition of Oxford that we want
to bring to the programme where all the disciplines interact, and you'll have engineers
talking to computer scientists, to lawyers, and to philosophers, and you'll see this
throughout the programme – that we bring all those strands of knowledge together to
discuss what AI really means.

So what to expect over the coming weeks? In addition to gaining many insights, you will
be doing activity submissions and quizzes, and I would encourage you to please look at
the programme handbook. Your Tutor Team is available for all programme- and content-
related questions. Please remember to at-tag them when you post questions in the
discussion forums in each module.

The Tutor Team and myself are very much looking forward to working with you on this
programme. Please do reach out if you've got any queries, otherwise, may I wish you best
