Using Weather Instruments

Q4_W4_Science 4

Use weather Instruments and describe the different weather components in a weather
chart.

Introduction:

To predict the weather, temperature of the surroundings is measured.

Thermometer is used to measure the temperature. Temperature refers to how hot or cold
the atmosphere is. The angle at which the sun’s rays strike the surface affects the
temperature of the place.
We can tell the weather conditions by observing the direction and speed of the
wind. Wind is the movement of air.  Wind vane shows direction of the wind. Anemometer
measures wind speed. Windsock can show both the wind direction and speed.
A barometer is a scientific instrument that is used to measure air pressure in a certain
environment. Rain gauge measures the amount of rainfall.
Weather refers to the current state of atmospheric conditions at a specific time and
place. Weather charts tell about weather components that determine the weather condition at a
given time. There are six main components, or parts, of weather. They
are temperature, atmospheric pressure, wind, humidity, precipitation, and cloudiness.
Together, these components describe the weather at any given time. Humidity refers to the
amount of water vapor in the air. Water vapor is a gas in the atmosphere that helps make
clouds, rain, or snow. Humidity is usually expressed as relative humidity, or the percentage of
the maximum amount of water air can hold at a given temperature. Atmospheric pressure is the
weight of the atmosphere overhead. Changes in atmospheric pressure signal shifts in the
weather. A high-pressure system usually brings cool temperatures and clear skies. A low-pressure
system can bring warmer weather, storms, and rain.
