 Weather is the general condition of the atmosphere over a specifies area within
24hours.
 Weather Instuments are used to predict the weather.
 Thermometer- is used to measure air temperature. Temperature is the hotness and
coldness of air around us. Most thermometers are closed glass tubes containing
liquids such as alcohol or mercury. When air around the tube heats the liquid, the
liquid expands and moves up the tube, a scale then shown what the actual
temperature is.
 A thermometer may bear the Fahrenheit, the Celcius
scale or both. Air temperature is read in degrees
Fahrenheit of (0F) and degrees Celcius (0C). There
are other kind of thermometer such as clinical
Air Thermometer Clinical
thermometer, room thermometer, and scientific
Thermometer thermometer.

 Wind Vane- is a device that tells the direction of the wind.

The four letters N, E, W, S represent the four directions:
North, East, West, South.

 Anemometer- measures wind speed, the cups catches

the wind, turning a dial attached to
the instrument

 Barometer- is an instrument use to measure air pressure. One way to measure air
pressure is in inches of mercury.

Barometer
 Rain Gauge- is a meteorological instrument for determining the depth of precipitation
that occurs over a unit area, and thus measuring rain fall amount. One millimeter of
measured precipitation is equivalent to one liter of rainfall per meter square.

Since, there are wide varieties of weather conditions that can be measured, there are
also large assortment of weather instruments for many different purposes.

 Pyrometer - A pyrometer is used to measure distant objects. It measures radiations

from the object without having to have in contact. It is also called infrared
thermometer or a non- contact temperature.

 Windsock- is a textile tube that resembles a giant sock. It can be used as a basic
guide to wind direction and speed or as decoration. Made of fabric sewn around in
hollow circular frame, shaped or when wind blows through them they take of a cone.

 Hygrometer- is an instrument used to measure the amount of water vapor in air/

humidity.

 Disdrometer- is an instrument use to measure drop size distribution and velocity of

hydrometeors. It is a laser instrument that measures the drop size rainfall types.
 Ceilometer- is an instrument use to measure cloud ceiling. It is a device that uses a
laser or other light source to determine the height of a cloud ceiling or a cloud base
from the ground.

REMEMBER THESE:
Weather charts tells about weather components that determine the weather condition at any given
time. The daily Weather Forecast will help you know the weather condition.
Example:
Date/Place Time Wind Wind Temperature Sky
Speed Direction Condition

May 3/ Cotabato City 7:00 AM moderate East 23ºC Fair to

cloudy
May 3/ Davao City 7:00 AM light North 28ºC Clear

To make interpretation about the weather as recorded in the weather chart, we have to know the sky
condition, look at the temperature (maximum or minimum). Daytime maximum temperatures usually
occur between 1-4 pm. Night time minimum temperatures usually occur at or near sunrise.Wind spped
and direction are important for monitoring and predicting weather patterns and global climate. Shifts in
wind direction may indicate changes in weather.

ACTIVITY: Direction: Using the data on the Weather Forecast, write TRUE if the
statement is true and FALSE if it is false.

___________ 1. It is partly cloudly in most places.

___________ 2. Air temperature rises and falls. This space is
___________ 3. Air temperature reading is the same in all places. for the QR
Code
___________ 4. Metro Manila, Cebu, and Davao are mostly cloudy.
___________ 5. Baguio has the lowest temperature reading?

 Weather affects our daily activities. Observing weather conditions will help you
decide the kind of activities you will do for the day. Weather helps you decide
what games you play, what clothes to wear or what food to eat.
 We need to know weather conditions to keep us safe. Knowledge on the
weather forecast for the day also helps us make necessary preparations. You
will know the weather by simply listening over the radio or watching weather
forecast on television. You can also read weather reports from newspaper.
The following are the safety precautions during sunny day and rainy days:

Remember, sunscreen will protect against the sun’s
ultra violet (UV) rays, but not from the heat.

7. Enjoy outdoor activities like strolling in the park, going on

a picnic, swimming, field trips or travelling, kite flying,
camping and playing outdoor games and sports.

 Do you know what to do when the weather is bad? Are you prepared before a
typhoon comes? What do we need to do before, during and after the typhoon?
 In case of stormy weather, we are advised to stay home and take the
necessary precautions in order for us to feel secure and safe. Here are some:
Before a typhoon:
• Listen to weather forecast. • Check and fix your house for any damage.
• Have a first-aid kit. - Know the location of evacuation centers.
• Store adequate supply of readyto-eat-food, water and clothing.
• Prepare flashlight, batteries, candles and kerosene lamps.
• Check electrical posts to prevent accidents.
• Secure domesticated animals in a safe place.
During a typhoon:
• Stay calm and know what to do. •Do not wade along flooded areas.
• Follow the advice of local authorities.
• If no advice to evacuate, better stay indoors. Postpone any travel.
• Always keep yourself updated with the latest weather report.
• If you see signs of water rising, better turn off the main sources of electricity.
• Keep your electric-powered items stored in higher areas.
• Wear protective gears such as rain coats and boots.
After a typhoon:
• Repair all damages in the house. •Watch out for live wires or electrical outlets.
• Monitor and update yourself with the progress of the typhoon.
• Wear protective gears such as boots to avoid water-borne diseases.
• Clean up and dispose things that may be breeding places.
