CE902 Proposal Assignment

(Resit)
July 2021
CE902 Project Proposal Assignment - Resit

• These notes provide guidance on what should be in the project proposal resit assignment

• See example proposals and project proposal grading guidelines on Moodle

• Your CE902 proposal (resit) will be assessed by your supervisor and a second assessor

• The deadline for the CE902 resit proposal is TBA (by the CSEE school office)

• It is worth 40% of your CE902 assessment

CE902 Resit Proposal – choice of topic

• You need to agree a topic with your supervisor for your project proposal resit that is different to

your previous CE902 proposal (and also different to your master’s project)

• We will be using Turnitin to check for plagiarism, so your written submission cannot repeat work

that you have submitted before, or that will be included in your master’s dissertation, as this will

be classed as PLAGIARISM

• You should therefore choose a topic that is similar but different to your previous topic

• Once you have agreed a topic and title with your supervisor, you should then write a proposal for

this project as if you were taking it through to completion as a master’s dissertation project

• However, in this case you will just be completing the proposal stage

• This resit proposal assignment will then be marked in exactly the same way as the previous

CE902 proposal assignment (see below)

What should be clear from any report

• What is the problem area?

• Your research question

• Why is this problem important?

• What methodology you aim to use?

• What you expect to find

If a reader cannot figure these out, you will get very low scores.
Purpose of the proposal: Preparing for your MSc dissertation

• An opportunity to think carefully about your project topic and execution

– Ensure you are defining a real problem

– Clearly define your objectives and methods

– Allows your supervisor to provide useful feedback

• Identify areas that you should read about, implementation details to think about, start collecting
data and software modules

– Minimizes problems and setbacks later in the project execution

• Gain practice in effective and clear writing about research

– Important in our fields and hugely important for your dissertation

• Remember: the CE901 dissertation should significantly

build on the background reading from the CE902 proposal.

We will be checking for plagiarism!
